The Philadelphia Phillies set their Opening Day Roster yesterday ahead of tomorrow’s Opening Day matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

With 23 spots basically locked down, the Phillies only had two spots remaining.

The Phillies opted to keep utility infielder Pete Orr on their roster. It has been clear that the Phillies would carry an extra infielder given the rash of infield injuries. First baseman Ryan Howard, second baseman Chase Utley and utility infielder Michael Martinez will all open the season on the disabled list. Hector Luna, who had a very solid Spring was optioned to Triple A, as the Phillies instead chose a known commodity in Pete Orr. Orr helped the Phillies in the early part of last year as well, and brings some speed to the club.

The other roster spot went to left hander Joe Savery. Savery will be the Phillies second left handed option out of the bullpen. Their primary option, Antonio Bastardo, struggled with velocity during the Spring, but appears to be rounding into form. Bastardo had a breakout year last year for the Phillies. Savery will provide the Phillies with some depth out of the pen.  The Phillies initially signed Dontrelle Willis in the offseason to a non-guaranteed deal to be the lefty specialist, but then wound up releasing him after he struggled.  Joe Savery, as has been well documented, has a pretty amazing story.  Savery was selected as a first round pick in 2007.  His career derailed a bit and the lefthander struggled to find his groove.  Two years ago, mainly on the strength of his bat and not his arm, the Phillies decided to try and convert him to a first baseman.  While that project had varying degrees of success, Savery wound up reprising his role as a pitcher, this time as a reliever.  After a solid spring, he is now a member of the Phillies.

The Phillies optioned Scott Podsednik to the Triple A, despite the fact that he also had a phenomenal Spring.  Also optioned was pitcher Raul Valdes.

So, without further adieu, here are your 2012 Philadelphia Phillies:
