Kyle Kendrick is a younger version of Tim Wakefield without the knuckleball. He can start, or he can pitch out of the bullpen. In either case, he rarely misses a bat, induces his fair share of ground balls and has a winning record to show for his five years pitching with the Philadelphia Phillies. But is he worth the $7.5 million the Phillies just decided to pay him for the next couple of years? When the numbers are crunched, it doesn't appear that he is. The deal works out to $3.75 million a season. If we use WAR as a valuation tool, Kendrick has been worth 2.3 fWAR over his five seasons. Using Fangraphs' method of putting a dollar value on those wins over replacement, Kendrick has been worth $9.7 million over those five seasons or $1.94 million per season. Nearly half of that $9.7 million was earned in his rookie season when his performance was rated at a value of $4.2 million. His valuation for the past four seasons: $0, $1.6, $2.8 and $1.0 (in millions). Even if you ave...

Phillies give Kyle Kendrick two years, but why?
The Phillies gave starter Kyle Kendrick a two years, $7.5 million deal to buy out his next two arbitration years. Kendrick agreed to a one year, $3.585 million deal last month that would cover his 2012 season. He's not a particularly great pitcher, and I actually figured he'd be a nontender candidate in the coming offseason. So why did Phillies GM Ruben Amaro feel the need...
Phillies Waste More Money On KK

Kendrick 2 Year Deal & Blanton-Abreu-Burnett Swap
KK Deal:2 years $7.5M to a 6th starter/bullpen longman. I'm confused, but that's exactly what Amaro doled out for Kyle Kendrick. KK was set to make $3.585 this season, and under the new contract his 2012 salary is yet to be announced. I like KK and think he has value, but there's a point when salary outweighs usefulness. However, with Cole Hamels and Joe Blanton both...
