The Philadelphia Phillies will atemmpt to re-sign free agents Ryan Madson and Jimmy Rollins, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

Madson is part of a closer pool in free agency that includes Jonathan Papelbon, Heath Bell and Joe Nathan. He moved from the eighth-inning role this season and was 4-2 with 32 saves in 34 chances and a 2.37 ERA.

Madson's value to the Phillies was increased when the team declined the 2012 option on oft-injured Brad Lidge, whom Madson replaced as closer.

The report said the Phillies had contacted Scott Boras, the agent for Rollins, several times in recent days, looking to initiate conversation.

"Jimmy knows we'd like to bring him back," Phillies general mananer Ruben Amaro Jr. told the newspaper. "We've been playing phone tag a little bit with (Boras)."

The Phillies have an exclusive negotiating window with Rolins, a shortstop and former National League MVP who is believed to be looking for a five-year deal. He has spent his entire career in Philadelphia and batted .268 with 16 homers, 63 RBI and 30 steals this season.
