Found March 24, 2013 on Phillies Nation:
The Phillies lost to the Boston Red Sox in Clearwater, 7-6. After the game, they cut veteran infielder Yuniesky Betancourt, allowing him to pursue other opportunities. Betancourt played well with the Phillies, hitting .447 over 17 games. However, with Kevin Frandsen and Freddy Galvis ahead of him, and the need for a fifth outfielder, Betancourt was expendable. On top of that, his regular season numbers haven’t been very good. Over the last 5 seasons, Betancourt ranked 316 out of 349 qualified players with a .666 OPS. During the game, Ryan Howard and Chase Utley hit back to back home runs, their seventh and fourth of the spring, respectively. Utley finished 3-for-4 with 4 RBI. Cliff Lee wasn’t great, going 5 1/3 innings, giving up six runs and nine hits.

Phillies Make Mistake Releasing Betancourt

Yuniesky Betancourt had an option in his contract with the Philadelphia Phillies that if he was not going to make the 25 man roster, he would be notified by March 25 and could ask for his release. Betancourt was released after today’s Grapefruit League game against the Boston Red Sox at Bright House Field. The move is a mistake for the Phillies who will likely count on Freddy Galvis...

Betancourt Released; Phillies Walking a Very Tight Rope

Despite a superb spring, Yuniesky Betancourt has been released. In his contract, March 24th was designated as the deadline for the Phillies to either keep him on the big league roster or let him go. They chose to let him go even after Betancourt hit .447 with 14 RBI with 3 doubles and a home run in 47 at-bats. This means that both Freddy Galvis and Kevin Frandsen will make the team...

Despite hot spring, Phils release Betancourt

Yuniesky Betancourt couldn't have done much more than he did in camp with the Phillies, this spring, but it still wasn't enough. Instead of hanging onto the veteran infielder, the Phillies elected to not keep Betancourt, opening spots for two familiar faces.

Yuniesky Betancourt Will Be Cut By the Phillies

Yuniesky Betancourt never had to fight for a job before 2012. As a member of the Seattle Mariners, Kansas City Royals, and Milwaukee Brewers, Betancourt usually entered camp as the team's starting shortstop. Just one season for the Royals as a part-time player and Betancourt had to fight for a...

Phillies Roster Projections 3/25

Well, one can't accuse Ruben Amaro of not doing anything. The Phillies are essentially down to just one decision. Here's the news: The Phillies have cut Yuniesky Betancourt. No shock there. There just wasn't 40 man room to add him. Besides, Galvis played well enough this spring that using an...

Milwaukee ready to sign Betancourt

Yuniesky Betancourt, Milwaukee's starting shortstop in 2011, appears set to rejoin the Brewers in a backup role. First reported by's Ken Rosenthal, Betancourt will sign a one-year deal with the Brewers pending a physical. Betancourt, 31, spent spring training with the Philadelphia Phillies, hitting .447 with one home run and 14 RBI in 47 at bats before asking...

Bye-Bye RoLo. Betancourt Next?

*Rodrigo Lopez was unceremoniously released yesterday.  In recent years, both his major and minor league numbers have been poor, so sending him along his unmerry way was the right move. The Phillies don't need his type of depth in Triple-A.  Tyler Cloyd, Jonathan Pettibone, Adam Morgan, and Ethan Martin all serve the same purpose as RoLo would have this season, except with...

Galvis Continues to Rake in Win over Rays

On Sunday, the Phillies disposed of journeyman Yuniesky Betancourt because they have faith in Freddy Galvis. And on Tuesday, Galvis continued his spring tear, going 2-for-4 with a home run, his third of the spring, and three RBI in the Phillies 4-1 victory over Tampa Bay. Galvis now has 12 extra-base hits in 70 at-bats during Spring Training, good for a .905 OPS. Any worries about...

Phils Smash Five Homers, Burry O’s 13-4

Chase Utley went deep twice, while Yuniesky Betancourt, Domonic Brown, and Ryan Howard chipped in with a long ball of their own as the Phillies move to 13-13 in Grapefruit League action with a 13-4 win. The Good Yes, the Phillies faced Bruce Chen. And sometimes it is hard to remember that Bruce Chen was almost as valuable to the Royals in the last two seasons as Kyle Kendrick and...

How and why the Phillies roster fills out

Did Aaron Cook grab a bullpen spot with another good outing on Saturday? What about the status of Yuniesky Betancourt, does he stay or go? When you try to figure out the 25-man roster for the Phillies, you can't just look at the numbers; here's why...
