It’s easy to forget how terrible Nick Swisher was at the beginning of last season, so let me remind you. On June 1 the outfielder was batting .213 with three homers and 20 RBI. Compare that to the year before when he was batting .317 with nine homers and 28 RBI at the same point. Swisher won’t come close to batting .300, and even .280 is a bit of a stretch, but he would have been right around 30 homers once again last season if not for his atrocious start. Because of the lineup and park he plays in, Swisher can put up very good R/HR/RBI numbers that offset his lack of speed and below average batting average. Best case scenario: Corey Hart (MIL) sans steals Similar players: Torii Hunter (LAA), Logan Morrison (MIA), Nelson Cruz (TEX) when Cruz has an extended DL stint Worst case scenario: Josh Willingham (MIN) Strengths Lineup, power, consistency. Swisher can approach 30 homers with over 80 runs and RBI. It’s hard to see him not putting up these numbers. Seriously...

Joba throwing from flat ground

Joba Chamberlain‘s rehab appears to be going well following Tommy John Surgery last June. He gave an update on Twitter the other day and said that he is throwing from flat ground with Larry Rothschild and feels great. Recovery from TJS typically takes 12-18 months, but some guys do come back in 11. From all of the updates that Joba has given it certainly sounds like he could...

Yankees Sign Manny Delcarmen to Minor League Contract

Yankees signed RHP Manny Delcarmen to a minor league contract. He also gets a spring training invite. Delcarmen, who turns 30 next month, posted a 5.59 ERA and 33/15 K/BB ratio over 38 2/3 innings last season with the Triple-A affiliates for the Mariners and Rangers. The former Red Sox reliever hasn’t pitched in the [...]

Curtis Granderson Lauds Yankees' Pitching Upgrades, Believes American League East Race Will Be Tight

BOSTON -- When Curtis Granderson first stepped into the batter's box against pitcher Michael Pineda last year, he didn't notice any fear. "He came out, he came right at you," Granderson said Monday before the Hot Stove Cool Music roundtable. "I don't remember the exact results of what we did against him [New York won 4-3], but I knew he was in there, knew...

Breaking: Jim Hendry Hired by New York Yankees

Reports are coming in that Jim Hendry is being hired by the New York Yankees as a special assistant to GM Brian Cashman.  It is a multiyear deal with the terms not being released yet.  Hendry spent 17 years with the Chicago Cubs in numerous positions with the most recent being GM. Hendry got a bum deal in Chicago.  After coming within five outs of the World Series in 2003 the...

Kuroda, Not Pineda, is Poised for Breakout Year

The deal that sent Michael Pineda to the Yankees has made him the talk of the rotation, but the real breakout candidate this year could be free agent Hiroki Kuroda. Kuroda is 36, so calling him a breakout candidate probably sounds odd; pitchers that are already past the age of 35 don’t normally improve significantly. He is, however, entering his fifth season in the States...

2012 Preseason 2B Rankings

Sweet swing, huh T? TOp 30 2B 1.  Robinson Cano, NYY  Cano is coming off of a year in which he was the only 2B to top 100 RBI (118), was #2 overall in runs, and finished 3rd in homers.  He was #1 in OPS and Slugging %.  Put all this together with a .300+ average, and you have your #1 2012 fantasy baseball 2B.  I have seen him ranked lower, but he as durable as it gets, plays...
