The New York Mets (13-11) looked to bounce back after a tough loss last night to the Houston Astros (10-14), but instead were eliminated from the opening silo as Jonathon Niese surrendered 5 first inning runs to a team that had failed to win 6 consecutive series.

Jonathon Niese (2-1, 4.08 ERA) struggled mightily in his 3 innings of work, allowing 2 home runs in his 3 innings of work. The first, a 2-run shot in the 1st inning, was nothing compared to the game winning 3-run shot that Chris Snyder delivered in the 2nd inning. Houston's offense was able to rock Niese for 6 hits in his short and ultimately unsuccessful outing. The bullpen was able to hold Houston to 1 run over the next 5 innings, but the game was ultimately determined in the opening innings.

The Mets offense was able to muster 3 runs, but the team's future will be reliant on how the pitching staff performs and the past 2 nights were certainly prime examples of how there will be big stretches of inconsistency on a staff lead by a former Cy Young award winner coming off of surgery and a knuckle baller. With Mike Pelfrey out, Jonathon Niese is a pitcher who will need to maintain consistency at the very least and step up and fill a huge void in the best case scenario.

David Wright continued to stay hot, recording 2 hits and bumping his average to .395 on the year. Josh Thole, Scott Hairston and Andres Torres all drove in runs on RBI singles but the Mets ultimately left 6 men on base and were 3-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

The Mets will seek to salvage the final game of their series in Houston tomorrow afternoon as Chris Schwinden will take the bump coming off of a dreadful outing in Colorado.
