Diekman entered the 2011 season with a goal of throwing all his pitches for strikes and getting into a hitter’s mentality in order to mix up his approach toward the opposition. The Philadelphia Phillies have signed veteran relief pitcher Chad Qualls to a one-year deal, according to multiple sources.
Qualls was 6-8 with a 3.51 ERA in 77 appearances for the San Diego Padres in 2011. He pitched 74.1 innings, posting an 8.8 H/9 and 2.4 BB/9 rate. Qualls leads all major league relievers with 512 games pitched since 2005.
