Found April 20, 2013 on Mets Merized Online:
Rafael Montero took s the hill for Binghamton today and dominated. When it comes to pitching prospects in the Mets organization, Zack Wheeler is the guy that the majority of fans will stop to see how he performed the night before. However, it seems that with every start Wheeler makes, he is getting further and further away from making his Citi Field debut. On the other hand, Rafael Montero seems to be getting closer and closer with every start he makes. Is there a more impressive pitcher in the Mets organization right now than Montero? He started today’s game for Binghamton and dominated again. He pitched six innings, allowing no runs, struck out six batters and walked none. He now has 27 strikeouts this season, and has only given up one walk. I think I have to say that again for affect – He now has 27 strikeouts this season, and has only given up one walk. That is about as phenomenal a ratio as you will see. He is holding hitters to a .182 average against him. In other words, the b...

Ike Davis and Lucas Duda combine for four homers for first time

Matt Harvey was the star of the show last night, as he pitched an outstanding game leading the Mets to a win over Stephen Strasburg.  But clearly the other story line of the game was the Mets getting two home runs apiece from their lefty power hitters Ike Davis and Lucas Duda.  It was the first time in the majors that they both hit two home runs in the same game. Both Davis...

The Buck Stops Here: Mets Take The Series With 2-0 Win Over Nats

The New York Mets (9-8) bounced back from a disappointing 7-6 loss to the Washington Nationals on Saturday, and took the series with a convincing 2-0 win this afternoon at Citi Field. The team is once again, a game over .500 for the year. Dillon Gee bounced back from a couple of brutal starts and tossed 5.2 innings, allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out six...

Matt Harvey vs. Other Mets Greats Through 14 Starts

Since being promoted to the big leagues on July 26, 2012, Matt Harvey has lived up to, and at times, exceeded expectations.  The former first round draft pick has become one of the toughest pitchers to hit in the National League since his debut and his confidence is on par with that of a veteran pitcher – a pitcher such as Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman and Dwight Gooden, to name a...

Parnell and the pen come up big for Mets

The New York Mets took the rubber game against the Washington Nationals Sunday afternoon en route to their third straight home series win of the season.  John Buck did what John Buck does, mash home runs (never really thought I’d be saying that).  His seventh homer of the year came in the second inning and was really all the offense the pitching staff would need.  The dinger...

Featured Post: Zack Wheeler Not Ready For Prime Time

Baseball 101: Regardless of the level of play, if a pitcher walks too many batters he will be beaten. It is a baseball fundamental understood by everybody, with the exception of those insisting the Mets bring up Zack Wheeler, who walked six hitters in his last start. The clamoring is getting louder in the wake of the Mets’ continued problems with the back end of their rotation...

Mets Designate Aaron Laffey for Assignment

MLB News: After struggling with a 7.20 ERA through ten innings for the New York Mets, LHP Aaron Laffey has been designated for assignment. The Mets now have 10 days to decide what to do with him. Being a lefty, Aaron will get another shot if the Mets decide to part ways with him. Fantasy Ramifications: There is no fantasy baseball relevance to this transaction. The post Mets...

In the battle of the Aces, Matt Harvey comes out on top

In the much anticipated match-up between two of the games best young arms, New York Mets star, Matt Harvey out-dueled Washington Nationals ace, Steven Strasburg. “I’m just impressed with their mound presence,” Dwight Gooden told MLB tonight’s crew of Harvey and Strasburg.  ”Tonight being there first hand to watch these guys, Matt Harvey is the real deal.  These guys...

Mets’ bullpen underwhelming so far

The headline sounds like a broken record to Mets fans, and may be a bit kind. The small sample size rule is in play of course, since the season is less than a month old, but so far in 2013 the Mets bullpen has not been very good. The bullpen has a record of 2-2 with an ERA of 5.47 in 52.2 innings pitched. As of 4/21, that ERA is dead last in all of baseball. That’s bad, but let’s...

Mets prospect Travis d’Arnaud fractures foot

New York Mets top prospect Travis d’Arnaud suffered a fractured foot while playing for the team’s Triple-A affiliate Wednesday night, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson told reporters that d’Arnaud sustained his injury while attempting to catch a foul ball. The catcher has since been fitted for a walking boot, and he will...

Tim Leary and the Subtle Danger of Talent

On January 18, 1985 Tim Leary was quietly traded by the New York Mets to the Kansas City Royals. Leary was selected out of UCLA in the first-round (second overall) by the Mets in the June 1979 Draft. Less than two years later, at age 22, Leary made his major league debut. It lasted seven batters. Life would have been better if no one said the phrase – ever — but it was too late...

Live Blogging Nationals vs Mets: Ike and Duda Go Yard!

Live Blog From Citi Field Pressbox Top First: It starts to rain right after the anthem and moment of silence for Boston and Texas. The weather isn’t Minnesota-Denver bad, but I thought there would be more people here for Harvey-Strasburg. Harvey strikes out his first hitter and gets out of the inning with a runner on second. Bottom First: Jordany Valdespin leading off again. Glad...

New York Mets fans cheered and chanted “USA, USA” after Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, was taken into custody Friday night. The Mets broadcast the news on their Jumbotron at Citi Field as they played the Washington Nationals.
