The Dodgers filled a hole on Wednesday when they acquired Hanley Ramirez, a much needed hitter for the middle of their batting order. But in the short term, the trade created a hole in the pitching staff, as the Dodgers need a starter for Friday's series opener in San Francisco.

Nathan Eovaldi was scheduled to pitch against the Giants on Friday, but he was traded to the Marlins in the Ramirez deal. The Dodgers plan to acquire a starting pitcher before Tuesday's non-waiver trade deadline, but it's highly unlikely any of their targets could be acquired, be rested, and ready to pitch on Friday.

"This is probably not the best-case scenario," manager Don Mattingly said. "I still feel in the long run we're better off. This start, maybe not, or maybe. There's a give and get, and (Eovaldi) was the price."

The two main in-house options both require roster moves.

Stephen Fife is on the 40-man roster, but he was optioned to Triple A Albuquerque on July 18 and can't be recalled within 10 days unless he replaces someone on the disabled list.

Allen Webster was scheduled to start for Double A Chattanooga on Thursday, but even if he heads to San Francisco instead, he is not on the 40-man roster and require a separate roster move.

Expect the Dodgers to be busy before Friday's game in San Francisco.
