An already cloudy first base picture for the Texas Rangers got a little murkier Wednesday after Mitch Moreland underwent surgery on his right wrist. Moreland had the pisiform bone removed from his wrist by Dr. Tom Graham. The pisiform bone is a small pre-shaped bone located at the base of the wrist. The expected recovery time from the procedure is 8 to 12 weeks, which means Moreland may not be ready when the Rangers begin spring training in February in Surprise, Ariz. He's now wearing a soft split and is expected to begin his rehab in a few days. Moreland was slowed by tendonitis in his wrist throughout the second half of the season. His numbers tumbled too, as Moreland hit just .241 after the All-Star break with five home runs and 27 RBI. The lack of production cost Moreland playing time too, as Michael Young and Mike Napoli saw their workload at first increase. Moreland didn't play in more than three games in any of the three playoff series for the Rangers and was just 3 for 29 in the postseason. He finished the regular season with a .259 average, 16 home runs and 51 RBI. Texas general manager Jon Daniels said after the season that Moreland's struggles had a lot to do with the wrist and that he's expected to be the team's first baseman in 2012. If that changes, there are certainly several attractive options on the free-agent market including Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols, although both will command money the Rangers may not want to spend.
