An extremely rare T206 Honus Wagner baseball card was sold for a whopping $2.1 million at an auction Saturday morning.Never before has a card sold for that much. The previous high was set back in 2008 when the same card sold for $1.62 million, according to ESPN's Darren Rovell. The buyer is unknown."My overall goal on the T206 Wagner from the start was to set a record for a trading card auction," Ken Goldin of Goldin Auctions, which auctioned the card. "My auction house set a new record by close to $500,000."The card, which was produced between 1909 and 1911, was originally included in cigarette packs, but Wagner's card was later pulled for an undisclosed reason. Speculation is he didn't like the message it sent to young kids about smoking. Wagner, however, smoked and endorsed cigars, leading some to believe he was merely upset with not being paid for his image.Only 60 T206 cards were ever distributed to the general public.Wagner played 21 seasons (1897-1917) in the major leagues and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1936. He boasted a .328 career batting average en route to winning eight National League batting titles. His 130.3 Wins Above Replacement ranks as the seventh-most among position players all-time.Other items sold at the auction included a replica 2009 World Series ring ($50,398), and a signed Derek Jeter game-used bat from the 2001 World Series ($37,486).Via Eye on Baseball
