Colby Rasmus did not win Monday's game, but he made possible the victory that ended Toronto's seven-game losing streak.

His three-run homer with two outs in the ninth put the Blue Jays ahead 7-6, and they went on to defeat the New York Yankees 8-7 in 11 innings.

The center fielder has been in a terrible slump, from his hitting to his fielding to his hair style.

He had not played in a game won by the Blue Jays since July 28. In the 20 games (18 of them starts) in which he had played since then going into Monday, he had batted .165 (13-for-79) with two homers and three RBI.

Rasmus had 30 strikeouts in that stretch and four walks. He added two hits and two whiffs to those totals Monday.

He had missed some games in that stretch with a groin injury and because of the slump. During that July 29-Aug. 25 span, the Blue Jays were 5-21.

Monday's victory was not only the first in six games on the current road trip, but it ended an eight-game losing streak at Yankee Stadium for the Blue Jays. It put their August record at 6-18.

"I definitely felt better today," Rasmus said. "I took some good swings, which I was happy about, and I was letting the ball get to me. I've been trying to hit the ball too hard and not being patient up there. Today I was able to let the ball get to me and let my hands work."

But it took some basic, fundamentally sound baserunning by pinch runner Mike McCoy to score what turned out to be the winning run on a grounder to third base. McCoy held up but did not go all the way back to third on Adeiny Hechavarria's slow grounder to third baseman Jayson Nix.

When Nix threw to first for the out, McCoy made it home safely. There have been other instances under similar circumstances when Blue Jays runners have gone immediately home on the questionable contact play and were easy outs at the plate.

"He wants to get the out there and hopes I don't go," McCoy said.

McCoy is a small guy on a short bench, but he made a huge play.
