PLAYERS: David Price
TEAMS: Tampa Bay Rays
David Price won't be winning back-to-back Cy Young awards, but the reigning AL Cy Young might at least return to help the Tampa Bay Rays before the All-Star break. Manager Joe Maddon told reporters, including Jason Mastrodonato of MLB.com, that Price had simply been pushing too hard in his effort to return from a triceps strain. The Rays manager did not give a definitive timetable, simply saying that there was a good chance Price would be back before the mid-season break. "I think there's definitely a possibility he could be back before the All-Star break," Maddon said. "The soreness set us back a little bit, but it seems to be back on task right now." Price has been on the DL since May 16 with the strain. Earlier this week, he threw a bullpen session and experienced none of the soreness that he did during his previous session. Maddon is attributing the earlier soreness to Price treating the session as though he was following his normal routine at full health, rather than approaching it a little more cautiously. The Rays really need the left-hander to get healthy and back to his best as they do battle in the tightest division in baseball. All five AL East teams are separated by just 7.5 games and the Rays are in fourth place, six games back at 37-35. Their starting rotation has an ERA of 4.56, ranked 23rd in the majors, a stark contrast to last year's performance when they led the league with a 3.34 ERA, fuelled by Price's outstanding 2.56 mark.
