After several recent subpar outings, Cincinnati Reds closer Aroldis Chapman may be given a couple of days off to rest a fatigued shoulder.

Chapman’s decreased velocity Monday night in an outing against the Pittsburgh Pirates set off alarms in the Reds dugout. Known for his 100 mph-plus fastball, Chapman topped out at 97 mph and averaged a season-low 94.4 mph. Of his 23 pitches in the 10th inning, only seven were for strikes.

Chapman walked three of the five batters he faced Monday. On Friday against Houston, he gave up four hits, including a three-run homer, in a blown save.

Baker had to pull Chapman on Monday night in the middle of an inning for the first time this season.

One report Tuesday indicated that Baker was concerned enough to give Chapman a few days off to rest.

“His velocity was down,” Baker said after Cincinnati's 14-inning victory. “He didn't have any pain. He might be a little tired. We might have to rest him for a while here.”

Baker said doctors diagnosed the 24-year-old left-hander with with shoulder fatigue.

“We've got to take care of him,” Baker said.

Chapman shares the National League lead in saves with 35. He’s 5-5 with a 1.60 ERA and 199 strikeouts.
