Contract extension negotiations between David Wright and the Mets have been bumpy. Early on Tuesday, FOXSports.com reported the Mets offered their cornerstone third baseman a six-year, $100 million extension. It appeared the club was lowballing their six-time All-Star with that offer. With Wright expected to refuse the initial terms, the Mets reportedly upped the ante for the 29-year-old. According to the New York Daily News, the franchise added more cash and an extra year in its most recent proposal. Just a few days earlier, the Tampa Bay Rays set a benchmark for Wright’s contract by inking third baseman Evan Longoria to a six-year, $100 million extension that would take him through 2022. Since Wright has accomplished more throughout his career, he’d likely search for more compensation compared to Longoria. Despite the fact Wright is turning 30 in December, the Mets are showing a willingness to keep him in New York for his career. Wright rebounded from a sub par 2011 campaign with a terrific season in 2012, belting 21 home runs and 93 RBIs while hitting .306. In nine years with the Mets, he’s totaled 204 homers and 818 RBIs along with a .301 average. If both sides fail to reach a deal on an extension, Wright would be slated to hit free agency after next season.
