Although no official announcement has been made yet, two Canadian media outlets are reporting that Reds All-Star first basemen Joey Votto is likely to represent Team Canada during next month's World Baseball Classic.
The Toronto Star published a report late Tuesday with quotes from Canadian baseball director Greg Hamilton, who says he is "confident" that Votto is going to be a part of the team.
"As of right now, Joey is going to be with us,” Hamilton said.
Hamilton added that he isn't concerned about Votto's surgically repaired knee being a deterrent from having the former MVP participate.
“We have some things that still need to be dotted and crossed to make sure that everything’s fine... Joey wants to play, Joey feels good. We just got a few things that need to fall into place here.”
Final rosters for the WBC are due on Wednesday. However, Hamilton stated that Votto could still join Team Canada before their first game.
