MINNEAPOLIS The Minnesota Twins are tied for last place in the American League Central, but they're still putting up impressive numbers on the base paths this season. When Twins infielder Alexi Casilla stole second base in Monday's game against the Cleveland Indians, it gave Minnesota 118 steals as a team this season. That number is the highest since the Twins swiped 146 bases in 2001. The 118 stolen bases ties Minnesota's season total from 1999, which is tied for sixth-most in a season in team history. The Twins stole eight total bases in the four-game series with Cleveland, including four in Sunday's 8-7 walk-off victory. In that game, center fielder Ben Revere swiped a pair of bases, while Darin Mastroianni and Pedro Florimon also had one steal each. "We had a lineup in there with speed," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said after Sunday's win. "Try to move around the base paths. And we did that today and it's fun to watch. So we mixed in...

Florimon 'playing the way the Twins like'

MINNEAPOLIS Pedro Florimon made things look easy on Monday night as he patrolled shortstop for the Minnesota Twins. The 25-year-old Florimon, playing in just his 26th career big league game, turned in a pair of nifty defensive plays in Minnesota's 7-2 win over visiting Cleveland. The first of the two ended the top of the sixth inning as Florimon chased down a ground ball deep...

Twins' Diamond feels 'a little inconsistent'

MINNEAPOLIS Left-hander Scott Diamond is still arguably the Minnesota Twins' best starting pitcher currently in the rotation, but even Diamond has come back to earth a bit after his impressive run earlier in the season. The 26-year-old Diamond improved to 10-5 on the season on Aug. 6, but has won once since then. He was on the wrong side of a 9-1 rout by the Kansas City Royals...

Mauer not playing for Twins against Royals

Minnesota Twins All-Star Joe Mauer is not in the lineup for the second straight night after being scratched in the series opener against Kansas City with back spasms. The Twins put Drew Butera at catcher for the game Wednesday night. Mauer's back tightened up before batting practice Tuesday and he was scratched. While he was criticized for missing too many games last season...

Twins to open 2013 at home against Tigers

MINNEAPOLIS The Minnesota Twins released their preliminary 2013 regular-season schedule on Wednesday, which includes the Twins opening the season at Target Field for the first time in the parks four-year history. Minnesota will begin the 2013 season by hosting the Detroit Tigers on April 1, 3 and 4. As they have in the past, the Twins built in an off day in case of inclement weather...

Twins release their 2013 schedule

Well, I guess ALL of Major League Baseball released their schedule today, but the only team I am really concerned with was the Twins. There are two reasons that I really look forward to the schedule, and this year, it was given an added element. First, I wanted to see who the Twins drew in interleague play. This season, with 15 teams in each league, there was a standardization to...

Walters, Twins look to win series from Royals

The Kansas City Royals picked up a rare win over the Minnesota Twins to open their three-game series. Not facing Joe Mauer probably helped. Mauer's status for Wednesday night's game is uncertain as the Royals try to clinch their first series win against the Twins this season. Kansas City was 5-10 against Minnesota before a 9-1 win Tuesday. Will Smith struck out seven in...

Twins 7, Indians 2

Samuel Deduno struck out six in seven innings and Pedro Florimon made two stellar defensive plays to go with a double and a triple, lifting the Minnesota Twins to a 7-2 win over the Cleveland Indians on Monday night. Deduno (6-3) gave up just three hits and walked three, Ryan Doumit homered and Justin Morneau drove in two runs for the Twins, who took the final three games of the...

First Inning Chess Match in Minnesota: Ironic?

Of all the big Tuesday night games, perhaps none was bigger than the barn burner in Minnesota between the Twins and the Royals. The Twins failed in their quest for that elusive 60th win, and the Royals solidified their grip on third place in this 9-1 thriller. Some might say the game was not compelling, but I found at least two things that drew my attention in the first inning alone...

Wednesday Wonderings

I was going to do a statistic-laced post about the candidates for the Twins' rotation next year, but my computer kept shutting itself down due to depression so instead I'll just do that thing where I type whatever I think about.  I'll eventually get to the Twins' rotation because I've already put in too much time to just let it die, but man, looking at Cole Devries...

Links of the Day 9/9/12

Opening day and we’re imagining dragons. Will Ben Revere ever hit a home run? Inevitably yes. This is how Jamaica beat the USMNT. Chris Johnson is not as fast as he thinks he is. SCOREBOARD NCAAF Notre Dame 20, Purdue 17 – Admittedly, this game was a lot closer than I was expecting North Dakota State 22, Colorado State 7 – Not bad. Colorado State beat the Pac 12′s Colorado...
