Found February 08, 2013 on Mets Fever:
As pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report on Monday I thought it was a good time to take a look at the 2012-2013 off-season.  Despite the Mets being the last team in the league to sign a major league deal, and in all only giving out two of those deals, they did alright. The rotation is the strength of the club and Shaun Marcum is a solid addition, sure they'll miss Dickey if Dickey is what he was last season.  Within a matter of days the pen has been completely revamped and there are some solid relievers coming to camp. I would have pick-up a super utility guy like Ryan Theriot but the infield and there back-ups isn't the issue.  I thought they should have brought in a back-up catcher but clearly they are comfortable with Recker until d"Arnaud is called up. The real misstep this off-season was the outfield, I have a hard time believing that the plan was to pursue Bourn all along and really if they do land Bourn, then they had a solid off-season taking into consideration they're still building this organization.  I think they misread the market and Bourn is now their scramble to recover.  Either they thought players prices would come back to them or they thought they could land a trade that never materialized.  Without Bourn it was a disappointing off-season but if they land him I believe it's a big step toward changing the perception about the Mets...Subtractions                                                                                        R.A. Mets Must Resist Temptation With Zack Wheeler

Zack Wheeler (photo credit Daily News) It’s no secret the Mets have concerns in their rotation, but that doesn’t mean they should rush Zack Wheeler, regardless of how good a spring training he has. The Mets tooker a somewhat patient approach with Matt Harvey, waited to bring him up last summer and gave him ten starts in which he showed his potential. The Mets need to do the same...

Backup backstop battle: Anthony Recker v. Landon Powell

As an overabundance of Michael Bourn rumors float around in the minds of Mets fans everywhere, the team will see pitchers and catchers report to spring training in less than a week. Pending any new additions, the Mets have spots on the opening day roster available, which should create healthy competition between players for the open jobs. Which spots are up for grabs? Who is most...

2013 Mets Draft report: A story of mock drafts

There are a number of sites that review mock drafts before the season gets underway and they will continue to mock draft until the real draft happens.  I’ve taken it upon myself to look at some of the selections and review them before I submit the player that I currently project as the Mets’ First Rounder. Jonathon Crawford: RHP – (My MLB Draft, Minor League Ball) The Junior...

Terry Collins wants Zack Wheeler to learn from Matt Harvey

For New York Mets fans, it seems like pitchers Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler have had their names linked together for some time now, even if the two have only been pitching in the same organization for just over a year.  That’s what excitement and anticipation will do as the hope of this somewhat jaded fan base looks for something to cling to as we head into the 2013 season. ...

Mets Rename Their Spring Home Tradition Field

Adam Rubin reports that the Mets’ stadium in St. Lucie, formerly known as Digital Domain Park, is reverting back to Tradition Field. Tradition, Florida is again the sponsor, but no details on the naming rights deal yet. The Mets ballpark held the name Tradition Field from 2004-09. During the regular season, the St. Lucie Mets play their home games at Tradition Field.

Old Time Mets: Bob Friend, Bob Shaw, and Ralph Terry

In 1966, in the days before Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, Gary Gentry, and Nolan Ryan, when the Mets’ young pitchers were named Dick Selma, Dick Rusteck, Darrell Sutherland, and Rob Gardner, the Mets tried to provide some veteran presence on the staff to help carry the team to respectability while the young pitchers developed. In the early sixties, you could make up a pretty good...

John Buck: More Throwback Than Throw-In

When the Mets sent R.A. Dickey to Toronto earlier this offseason (along with Josh Thole and Mike Nickeas), they received two of the Blue Jays’ top prospects in Travis d’Arnaud and Noah Syndergaard.  Toronto also threw in veteran catcher John Buck to complete the deal.  Buck is expected to begin the season as the Mets’ No. 1 catcher, eventually deferring to d’Arnaud when...

The quest for civil, intelligent and passionate comments

This article will have zero Mets content. But at the same time, it seems critical to the future of the site and worthy of being posted. Up until this point, the main worry in regards to the blog has been building an audience. Now that has been sort of accomplished, my concern is how to keep quality high. That’s quality on our end and quality on your end, too. Writing can be a very...

Rebuilding the Mets, A Historical Perspective

In 1980, Baseball in New York featured a Yankee team that was a legitimate contender. Having won it all in 1978, they looked pretty solid. The overbearing and uncompromising Yankee owner George Steinbrenner was determined to establish his Yankees as perennial contenders by sheer force of will. The Mets on the other hand were awful and ended up losing 95 games. It’s almost hard...

Would You Accept A Mets Player That Was Gay?

There is nothing wrong, weird, or any other negative adjective you can think of, with being a homosexual. It is a lifestyle that over the past twenty years has become more accepted in society, and yet still has roadblocks to it being fully accepted. After the Super Bowl week, where 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver talked about how a gay teammate would not be welcomed in the locker...

This Week’s Featured Post: The Clock Has Started Ticking On The Sandy Experiment

Pundits often say a college football coach deserves at least two years to turn a team over before anyone can honestly pass judgement.  That time provides the new coach with enough time to recruit his own players and implement his own scheme.  General managers in Major League Baseball get no such grace period.  Thus the dilemma Sandy Alderson currently finds himself in. Since taking...
