A few weeks ago Jimmy Rollins was public enemy #1. Rollins has always been a lightning rod for controversy and this season has been no exception. After signing a contract extension in the offseason, it’s hard to say that the longtime shortstop has had a stellar year.

Rollins, as he has done in the past, was pulled from a game and benched recently for failing to hustle on a pop up to the pitcher. It was a widely chronicled story and worse yet, it was the second time in as many weeks he was guilty of not giving full effort.

Manager Charlie Manuel spoke with Rollins, as he had two weeks before that. Fans were plenty displeased and as usual Rollins showed very little remorse.

Since then, Rollins has gone back to doing what people in Philadelphia are more familiar with – leading. The Phillies were considered dead when Rollins was violating the golden rule of not hustling, but have now climbed back to within 3 games of their 6th straight postseason appearance. Rollins has had a lot to do with that.

Rollins led off last night’s 12-6 rout of the Houston Astros with his 20th home run of the season. He leads the team in that department. It was his 3rd homer in 4 games, two of which put the Phillies ahead in games that could make or break their season.

Last night Rollins ranged back to catch a shallow pop fly. Centerfielder John Mayberry ranged in and eventually called Rollins off of the play and made the catch. Afterward, Rollins and Mayberry exchanged some playful words and for the first time I can recall all season, Rollins flashed that million dollar smile. The one that lets you know he’s having fun again. It was a welcomed sight in this improbable stretch run.

In addition to smashing that home run and giving himself his fourth 20 home run season, Rollins has been resurgent over the last two weeks. In 12 games, Rollins is hitting .306 with 2 doubles, 4 homers, and 9 RBI in 49 AB to go along with 3 stolen bases. With the Phillies season on the line, it’s been good to see Rollins leading the charge.

Shooting Stars: Phillies score early and often in rout of Astros

Jimmy Rollins started it with a bang. Jeremy Horst ended it with a punchout. That was the way the Phillies dismantled  the Astros one night after they stunned them with an eighth-inning rally. In addition to downing the Astros, the Phillies kept their playoff hopes alive by returning to the plus side of the win column and gaining on the Brewers and Pirates in the wildcard standings...

Phillies miss opportunity to gain ground in Wild Card race

The Phillies felt pretty confident with Kyle Kendrick on the mound last night. His 2.34 ERA since the All Star Break was the second best in all of baseball. Their opponent was the worst team in baseball. In the end, things didn’t work out quite as they had hoped. Kyle Kendrick was not sharp in his 5 innings of work, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits as he dropped to 9-11 on the season...

Cole Hamels Seeks to Put Phillies Back On Winning Track In Houston

Last night, the Phils dropped their first game in over a week, snapping a seven-game win streak, and propelling them back four games in the Wild Card race. In the early goings, it looked like the Phillies victory: a four-run lead against a pathetically weak offense in the Astros. Nope. The Astros would slowly come back to come within one run in the fourth inning. They would keep...

Astros shut out Phillies 5-0

HOUSTON -- Kyle Kendrick and the Philadelphia Phillies picked the wrong time to stumble in an already heated race for a spot in the playoffs. Kendrick gave up four runs in five innings while the bats went cold, and the Phillies fell 5-0 to the lowly Astros on Saturday night for their second loss in three games. The win was a feat of sorts for the Astros, who avoided -- at least...

Ugly Seventh Inning and Bullpen Meltdown Lead to 7-6 Loss Against Houston

This was a must-win for the Phillies, no doubt about that. Being three games back in the second wild card spot with 16 left to play, the Phils had to beat the last-place, worst in MLB Astros.  Luckily, the Phils backed up Roy Halladay with some early offense. In the top of the first inning, Jimmy Rollins scored on a sacrifice fly from Chase Utley. In the third, Scott Moore...

Phillies Streak Snapped by the Astros? Seriously?

Houston, which has the worst record in the majors (46-98), took the lead with a two-out rally in the eighth. Dominguez walked, and pinch hitter Scott Moore was hit by a pitch from Phillippe Aumont ...
