While the Miami Marlins are in the headlines for dismantling the core of their team, the New York Mets are apparently making an effort to retain theirs.  Tonight Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports said that the team submitted a proposal to Wright and the third basemen’s reps made a counter-offer. #bbpBox_268557552298639360 a { text-decoration:none; color:#0084B4; }#bbpBox_268557552298639360 a:hover { text-decoration:underline; } Sources: #Mets made offer to Wright. Wright’s side made counter-offer. Details of proposals not known. about 1 hour ago via Twitter for MacReplyRetweetFavorite @Ken_Rosenthal Ken Rosenthal I’d love to know what kind of numbers are being floated around right now but it’s all just hearse at this point.  According to Rosenthal Wright ”is believed to be seeking an extension that would approach, and perhaps surpass, left-handerJohan Santana’s club-record six-year, $137.5 million deal.”  YIKES!  Unless the team brings back Omar Minaya I can’t see them going that deep into their pockets for any player, even Wright.  There’s also the matter of trying to work out an extension with Cy Young candidate R.A. Dickey, of which Rosenthal writes: Photo by Michael G. Baron The Mets also want to sign right-hander R.A. Dickey to an extension, the team’s chief operating officer, Jeff Wilpon, told reporters Tuesday. The club’s negotiations with Dickey, to this point, are not as advanced as those with Wright, sources said. Dickey, a favorite for the National League Cy Young Award, which will be announced Wednesday, is under contract next season for $5 million. Wilpon, according to the New York Times, said the team’s priority was “to go through the process with (general manager) Sandy (Alderson) and the baseball department to get both of them signed. That’s what we’re doing.” Wilpon added that trade talks involving both players were “a backup at this point.” Photo by Michael G. Baron I can’t help feel the fate of these two are somewhat tied.  Wright will be 30-years-old by the time the 2013 starts and Dickey will be a crisp 38.  It’s safe to assume that at this point in their respective careers they want to be part of a club that is looking to compete for a championship now rather than later.  If the Wright domino falls it may make it easier for a teetering Dickey domino to follow suit, but it’s hard to imagine either player wanting to stick around if the team can’t show them they’re serious about committing to the immediate future.
