Found March 22, 2013 on Phillies Nation:
According to the Delaware News Journal’s Chris Branch, outfielders Darin Ruf and Jermaine Mitchell have been reassigned to minor league camp while pitcher Rodrigo Lopez has been released. Ruf was hitting .246 after today’s game but the main concern according to team officials was defense. Branch says team officials say Ruf needs more seasoning in the outfield while staying sharp at first base. Jim Salisbury quotes General Manager Ruben Amaro as stating Ruf will play left field for the IronPigs five times a week while playing first once a week. Mitchell, hitting .269/.321/.577 in Spring action, was not believed to have much of a chance to make the team out of camp despite his strong play while it was believed Lopez would be kept around as pitching depth. With two less outfielders, one has to believe Ender Inciarte’s chances of making the Phillies out of Spring Training have greatly increased.

Phillies option Ruf to Lehigh Valley

The speculation about whether Darin Ruf would make the Phillies roster this spring can now stop. The Phillies made the decision today to option Ruf to AAA Lehigh Valley. Optioning Ruf was one of three roster moves the Phillies made on Friday.

Rodrigo Lopez released by Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies have cut ties with veteran pitcher Rodrigo Lopez. Lopez, 37, had signed by the Phillies as organizational depth but failed to impress this spring. This spring Lopez allowed seven earned runs in nine innings of work. Lopez’s most recent outing on Monday likely ended his time with the team. All seven earned runs were scored in a two inning stint against...

Scouting Phils Prospect #6: Darin Ruf

The jury is still out on whether Darin Ruf will make the Phillies opening day roster, but odds are that at some point this season, he'll be back in Philadelphia. With big power and the ability to hit for average, Ruf could have big potential for the Phillies.

Darin Ruf Sent To Minors After Walk Off Home Run

A walk off home run was not enough in today's 7-6 victory over Atlanta to help Darin Ruf make the Phillies roster. Despite his offense coming around in recent weeks Ruf's defense needs work. On a day Delmon Young had four hits in a minor league game in which he...

Phillies Looking To Add Outfielder, Catcher

Photo: Philliedelphia/Frank Klose With only 10 days left until the Phillies open against the Altanta Braves, some roster questions remain. With today's demotion of Darin Ruf and with Delmon Young still expected to open the season on the disabled list, the Phillies have an opening in the outfield. Further, with...

Phillies Prospect Adam Morgan Takes The Mound Today Against The Atlanta Braves

Jermaine Mitchell gets an opportunity to show off his speed in the leadoff spot today. With Spring Training winding down the focus of these remaining games tends to be on those trying to make the team. In the case of pitchers, those making the staff tend to play in the...

Phillies 7, Braves 6

Upton homered to put Atlanta up 5-4 in the seventh and the Braves added a run on a double-play grounder in the eighth. The Phillies scored twice in...

Aaron Cook, Phillies Take On Wei-Yin Chen, Orioles In Saturday Afternoon Matchup

The Phillies certainly won in dramatic fashion yesterday with Darin Ruf's walkoff home run over Atlanta. Coincidentally, Ruf was informed that he was being optioned to AAA after the game. Ruf hit .246 (14-for-57) with six doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs in 19 Grapefruit League games, but his...

Bye-Bye RoLo. Betancourt Next?

*Rodrigo Lopez was unceremoniously released yesterday.  In recent years, both his major and minor league numbers have been poor, so sending him along his unmerry way was the right move. The Phillies don't need his type of depth in Triple-A.  Tyler Cloyd, Jonathan Pettibone, Adam Morgan, and Ethan Martin all serve the same purpose as RoLo would have this season, except with...
