The Mets are looking for top hitting prospects Mike Olt, 25, and Leonys Martin, 24, from the Rangers for R.A. Dickey according to John Harper of the Daily News.
However, the Rangers have not countered that proposal, Ken Davidoff says in a report for the New York Post.
The Mets and Rangers (and Mets and Blue Jays) have only had general discussions about talent; with neither team putting a deal on Sandy Alderson’s desk.
The Rangers are still working to acquire OF Justin Upton from the D-Backs, though they reportedly need a fourth team involved to help deliver Indians SS Asdrubal Cabrera to Arizona in the deal.
At the same time, free-agent Anibal Sanchez is still available and an option, as is OF Josh Hamilton.
The point is, Texas has options and will likely work through them before trading their best young talent for a 38-year-old knuckleball pitcher with a one-year deal.
Meanwhile, the Jays prefer Niese, and are asking for additional pit...

The New York Mets have proposed a trade to the Texas Rangers that would send knuckleballer R.A. Dickey to Arlington in exchange for a "rich package" of prospects, including third baseman Mike Olt, reports Ken Davidoff of the New York Post.
Davidoff adds in a separate tweet that
the lack of a counteroffer from the Rangers on the Mets’ initial
proposal could indicate...
The Mets are trying to figure out how the reigning NL Cy Young winner fits into their future plans, but the team is reportedly a little miffed with the knuckleballer's actions of late.
This afternoon at the New York Mets holiday party in Citi Field, R.A. Dickey told reporters he would test free agency after the 2013 season, if he does not sign a contract extension with the club this off-season. Which R.A. said would most likely mean he will not be back in 2014.
“If that’s the decision they feel like is best for the club, and that’s the decision that they...
The Texas Rangers drafted reigning National League Cy Young award winner R.A. Dickey back in the first round of the 1996 Amateur Draft. Dickey may have made his Major League Baseball debut with the Rangers back in 2001, but he gained notoriety and found success as a member of the New York Mets. Now, over six years since he last pitched for the Rangers, could Texas be making a play...
The New York Mets upped the ante last night in their bid to keep Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey in the fold.
A new extension would add two years and $20 miilion to the $5 million Dickey is scheduled to earn next season, according to sources. The previous offer was said to be a two-year extension worth $16 million.
The new terms were first reported by Andy Martino of the New York Daily...
NL Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey feels he's been more than fair in his request for a market-value contract extension, but also understands the business side. To that end, he told reporters that he likely won't be a Met beyond next season without one. The have three options regarding their ace. They can deal him, extend him, or let pitch in 2013 at $5 million. Both sides...
The Mets hold an annual Christmas party for charity, where they invite both players and members of the media. This is usually a win-win-win situation. Obviously, the charities win. The Mets win by getting publicity in late December that they otherwise would not receive. And the fans win because reporters get access to players and pass along some first-hand information. But this year’s...
Lending further to the accuracy of ESPN New York, reporting that R.A. Dickey is likely to remain a Met, the knuckleballer has agreed to play an elf alongside Ike Davis on Tuesday at Citi Field.
John Franco will play Santa Clause at the team’s annual holiday party tomorrow at Citi Field, as the Mets host schoolchildren from Far Rockaway who were affected by Hurricane Sandy.
Like many others, I’ve expressed some bewilderment on Twitter about how the Mets are handling their negotiations with R.A. Dickey. Dickey was one of the game’s best players in 2012, and the Mets were reportedly offering him the same kind of contract Joe Blanton just signed for, and have now improved their offer to make it equal to what Jeremy Guthrie just signed for. There’s...
The Texas Rangers have not quite had the offseason they've envisioned. They clearly want Justin Upton from the Arizona Diamondbacks, but that has yet to come to fruition. They were considered the front-runners to land Zack Greinke, but he is signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers. They've lost their all-time hits leader in Michael Young via trade to the Philadelphia...
R.A. Dickey and Mets general manager Sandy Alderson can agree on one thing - they would prefer to have closure before opening day.
The Cy Young Award winner can become a free agent after the 2013 season and says he won't negotiate once it starts, so the Mets probably have to sign him to an extension or trade him to get the best return.
Dickey says it ''would be disappointing...
The Mets and R.A. Dickey have remain far apart on a contract extension for the past month.
The Mets management wasn't thrilled with R.A. Dickey when he made comments about the team.
Saying they aren't treating him like a "Cy Young award winner" these days. Well, he is making a good point, but he is too old.
Personally, I don't mind seeing R.A. Dickey back...
Noted Mets fan Jon Stewart ... you know him as host of The Daily Show ... had R.A. Dickey on his show last week to discuss his book, his mountain climbing, and his baseball future. He pulled no punches right off the bat with his first question:

I was joined by former Kansas City Royals outfielder and current host on 810 WHB, Les Norman.
Les and I discussed the wild spending this winter, the value of hitting coaches and the Mets potentially trading R.A. Dickey. Hear his thoughts on whether prospects like Wil Myers and Mike Olt are overrated, and the importance of mental makeup in a ballplayer.
