The Mets finally confirmed the obvious and said Johan Santana won’t be on the Opening Day roster. Considering he hadn’t thrown since his look-at-me-I’m-angry stunt, March 6, there was no suspense to this move. “He’s not where he needs to be in his long-toss program,’’ manager Terry Collins told reporters in one of spring trainings’ biggest understatements. “Even if it’s next week, he’s not going to open with us. He’s going to have to get himself ready. And that’s going to certainly determine on a daily basis where he is. But we’ll be gone. I’ll have to monitor it by the phone.’’ Collins said Santana is staying in Port St. Lucie until he’s ready, which could be up to a month. Collins dodged the inevitable question of whether Santana’s stunt sabotaged his efforts to be ready. “It’s hard to say it was a setback. I just think he wanted to prove his arm was OK, that his arm was healthy,’’ Collins said. “Instead of trying to make sure and not let all this other stuff

No Conspiracy: The Mets Needed To Make Wright Captain

There is a conspiracy theory everywhere you look. I read one suggesting the Mets made David Wright captain to divert attention away from the field, where they are projected to be bad. Very bad. C’mon. Are you serious? How long do you think that will last? With virtually no hope given to the Mets this year, they’ll be coming out to see Wright and the young players such as Matt...

For me,...

No-Han 2.0 and Why Sequels Always Suck

It’s long been said that sequels are rarely ever as good as the original. It’s an undeniable truth. Of course there are exceptions like The Empire Strikes Back or The Godfather: Part Two, but for the most part sequels genuinely suck, to put it bluntly. No-Han was everything any Met fan could have ever hoped for last season and when it happened there wasn’t a dry eye in the...

Should The Philadelphia Phillies Have an Official Captain?

Yesterday the New York Mets named third baseman David Wright captain. Wright has decided not to wear the “C” on his jersey, though he still has that leadership role. This brought up the question should the Phillies name a player captain? At the very beginning of Spring Training closer Jonathan Papelbon questioned the Phillies’ leadership. He had said that last season he did...

Mets Rotation Facing Huge Hurdles Ahead Of Season Opener

The worst-case scenario seems imminent for the Mets. They faced a myriad of pitching questions entering spring training, including: Johan Santana’s availability after shoulder surgery; Dillon Gee coming off surgery to repair an injury to his shoulder; and injury-prone Shaun Marcum. All three have been answered in the negative. One would think a free agent would report to camp in...

Murphy Starting The Season On The DL Getting Closer To Reality, Wright Improving

Murphy and Wright are staring the DL in the face due to intercostal injuries. It’s starting to look more and more like Daniel Murphy will begin the 2013 season on the disabled list. Terry Collins had recently stated that if Murphy didn’t play in a major league level tune-up by this coming weekend, that he didn’t think he would be ready for the Opening Day. There is virtually...

Former And Current Mets Abound On All-WBC Team

The 2013 All-World Baseball Classic team was announced Wednesday, and the squad is riddled with Mets both current and former alike. Of course “Captain America” aka David Wright, who’s .438 batting average and 10 RBIs earned him the nickname made the team. Wright was also the only American to make the cut. From the reigning champion Dominican Republic, former Met spark plug...

Mets’ Batting Order Analysis

Without David Wright and Daniel Murphy available because of strained intercostal muscles, manager Terry Collins doesn’t have much to work with regarding his everyday line-up, which seems to change every day. Here’s today’s Mets-Cardinals lineup and how it might translate to the regular season: Marlon Byrd, rf: If Jordany Valdespin makes the team as it appears, he’ll lead...

Mets 7, Astros 5

Shaun Marcum gave the Mets another pitcher to worry about. Alex White could be the answer to the Astros' Marcum headed to New York for a cortisone shot in his right shoulder while the Mets were beating the Houston Astros 7-5 Wednesday. Manager Terry Collins expects the right-hander to return for another spring training start early next week. ''He said he gets it every...
