So you may or may not have known this, but the 40-man roster is full. Once the Dodgers brought the Coffey man on board, the 40-man roster overflowed. Now a decision had to be made on who was going to be chopped from the 40-man roster. Well as you know by the title, Russ Mitchell
is the one that got chopped. Are you kidding me right now!? Trent Oeltjen
and Ramon Troncoso
beat Russ out and remain with the Dodgers? Colletti strikes again!
I just don't get it. Mitchell is not the next MVP so don't get me wrong here. Mitchell is a guy that in my opinion has way more value than Oeltjen who has no business even being on a major league roster. Troncoso? How many mediocre bullpen arms do the Dodgers need? At least Mitchell can play the corner infield spots and has some power in his bat. Oeltjen ummmm, that's a big fat no. Troncoso is only sticking around because the coaching staff is so scared that 2012 is going to be a repeat of 2011. There are so many question marks heading into spring training that the Dodgers aren't quite ready to cut loose any bullpen arms yet.
Mitchell, who turns 27 next week, appeared in 25 games for the Dodgers last season, playing first base, third base and right field. He has struggled through his first 101 MLB plate appearances, but he hasn't really got any consistent playing time, or a real solid opportunity to play in the show. However, over in AAA ball Mitchell posted a .283/.372/.503 line in 392 plate appearances last year. In his nine years of minor league ball, Mitchell owns a .784 OPS. I still think Mitchell can be a valuable major league player, call me crazy. I think he could hit .265 and hit out 22 homers in one full 162 game season. I can guarantee you this, he would outperform Adam Kennedy
, Mark Ellis
, and Jerry Hairston Jr
. in 2012 if given the shot.
