Really??! Don’t expect Fernando Martinez to make it back to the Mets either. He may have arthritis and may never live up to the hype but waive him for Scott Freakin Hairston? One thing I hated was that the way the Mets would never bring players up to fill backup roles. Like Nick Evans who after his first go-round, looked pretty good. Now he’s going to be a Met killer for the Pirates; which may be where Martinez ends up too. Some team who values young players will take him. I never bought the hype but he is 23 and there is time for him to overcome some of the issues. And those issues are injuries. There are players who were always hurt and still productive and also players who were hurt early then relatively healthy. You have Carrasco who is cannon fodder but I guess the Mets have to try to get their $1M+ out of him. And let’s not forget the players Martinez could have been traded for…Manny Ramirez, CC Sabathia, Roy Oswalt, Dan Haren and others. Speaking of waivers. Herrera too? So T...

Hairston, 31, batted .235 (31-132) with 20 runs scored, eight doubles, one triple, seven home runs and 24 RBI in 79 games with the Mets last season. The 6-0, 204-pounder hit three pinch-hit home runs in 2011, one shy of the single-season franchise...

eMail Q&A: Can the Mets pull F-Mart back off waivers?

Michael F from Scottsdale sent in an e-mail asking: If Fernando Martinez is claimed off waivers, can the Mets pull him back? If so, will he still count against the 40-man roster? The best I can tell, Martinez was put on irrevocable waivers, which means he is gone if he gets claimed. The Mets cannot pull him back. Therefore, the 40-man Roster part of the question is irrelevant....

Astros claim Fernando Martinez off waivers

The Astros have claimed OF Fernando Martinez off waivers, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York. Martinez, along with LHP Daniel Herrera were placed on irrevocable waivers earlier this week and their departures clear two spots on the 40-man roster for Jon Rauch and Frank Francisco. Martinez hit .260 with eight HR and 30 RBI in 223 at-bats at Triple-A Buffalo, while batting .227...

Once a Top Prospect, Martinez Is Headed to Houston

Fernando Martinez, who was signed to great fanfare in 2005, was put on waiver by the Mets this week and was claimed by Houston.

Mets, OF Hairston finalize one-year deal

New York Mets outfielder Scott Hairston signed a one-year, $1.1 million contract on Wednesday. Hairston batted .235 with seven homers and 24 RBIs in 132 at-bats last season. The 31-year-old Hairston belted three pinch-hit homers, which was one shy of the team record.

More On Losing F-Mart

Toby Hyde of Mets Minor League Blog poses an interesting question: I just find this whole little episode stunning. Giving up Fernando Martinez for nothing just seems odd. Surely Martinez was worth something, like a live arm or two, on the trade market. Moreover, there is still slack on the Mets 40-man roster. This feels a little bit like the Omar Minaya days when the Mets often...

Ex-Mets phenom Martinez claimed by Astros

It spoke to the reputation of Fernando Martinez that the Major League team with the top waiver priority, Houston, scooped up the outfielder in a process ending Wednesday. It was an expected outcome for the Mets, who recently spent hours in meetings debating whether or not to cut their former top prospect loose.

Fernandomania Curtailed

It’s scary that as fans, any team’s fans, we get hooked on new players and young players and changes of direction and we’re sure we’re going to benefit — if it’s March — this year or — if it’s September — next year. Yet we just don’t know. It’s the ultimate blind trust. Theoretically, the future has never been more foreseeably agreeable for the Mets. If the...
