The Mets spent the majority of their offseason budget bringing in three relievers to shore up the back end of their bullpen. In the imperfect setting of Spring Training, none of the three new relievers has an ERA below 6.00 in Grapefruit League play. Meanwhile, Bobby Parnell, the guy that Sandy Alderson bent over backwards to remove from high-leverage innings, has yet to give up a run in eight games. In 7.1 IP so far this Spring, Parnell has allowed 4 H, 2 BB and has 8 Ks. Parnell is tantalizing because he can throw 100 mph but it has always been a good news/bad news type of thing. The good news is that his fastball has led to an impressive 8.3 K/9 ratio in his career, including a 9.7 mark last year. The bad news is that when batters make contact, they reach base at a surprisingly high rate. Parnell’s has a .342 BABIP in the majors. Combine that with a 4.0 BB/9 and the result is a ton of baserunners against a guy that seems like he should be a shutdown reliever. As Parnell h...

Mets lose as Murphy boots two

Well, this is something we might see more than a few times this season. Daniel Murphy collected a pair of hits, but also botched a couple of plays in the field in the eighth inning to cost Frank Francisco the game in a 3-2 loss to the Nationals. This will happen more than a few times this season, so let’s get used to it. Murphy is learning the position and the Mets don’t have...

The curious case of Danny Herrera

Adam Rubin reported yesterday that Daniel Herrera is most likely going to be given a spot in the bullpen for Opening Day. Tim Byrdak is recovering from knee surgery, but he’s expected only to miss  a couple games. To this point in Spring Training, Herrera has thrown 6.1 innings, posting a 1.42 ERA with two walks and one strikeout. So when Byrdak comes back, the Mets are going...

Mets' Dickey: I was sexually abused

Mets pitcher R.A. Dickey has revealed in a new autobiography that he was sexually abused as a child. In an excerpt published by Sports Illustrated, the Mets knuckleballer says he was 8 years old when a 13-year-old female babysitter began sexually abusing him. Dickey said in the book, "Wherever I Wind Up," he didn't reveal the abuse to anyone until telling his wife...

According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the Mets have re-signed free-agent RHP Chris Young to a minor league contract. Young won’t be ready to pitch until July at the earliest. Original Post 11:00 AM Adam Rubin is reporting that right-hander pitcher Chris Young is close to re-signing with the Mets on a minor league deal. Young made four solid starts for the Mets last season...

I’m John Delcos from newyorkmetsreport.com. I will be posting for Joe while he is laid up for several days following surgery. Joe and I have teamed up in the past and we will do again throughout the year. I wish Joe a speedy recovery and hope you will do the same with your comments. With a week to go before spring training, even despite their low expectations, the Mets aren’t...

Collins believes Duda is going to be a dynamic talent

Add Terry Collins to the list of people close to the game who are coming up with a somewhat unanimous opinion about New York Mets rightfielder Lucas Duda.   The 26-year-old hit his 4th homer Grapefruit League homer against the Braves yesterday and has put together quite an impressive Spring. #bbpBox_184980845893922816 a { text-decoration:none; color:#0084B4; }#bbpBox_184980845893922816...

Santana Slated To Throw 90-95 Pitches Today Against Cards

Johan Santana takes the mound today in a 1:05 PM start against the St. Louis Cardinals. Manager Terry Collins said Santana is expected to throw 90-95 pitches in the game. In his last start, also against the Cardinals, Santana threw 69 pitches, 48 of them for strikes in what was his best pitched game of the spring. His impressive performance prompted Collins to say this: “There...

Mets To Honor Gary Carter On Opening Day

The New York Mets will honor the memory of Gary Carter on Opening Day, Thursday, April 5 at Citi Field with his family participating in a special pre-game ceremony prior to the season’s opener against the Atlanta Braves at 1:10 p.m. Carter passed away February 16 after a courageous 10-month battle with brain cancer. Gary’s wife, Sandy, son, D.J., and daughters, Kimmy and Christy...

Young close to returning on MiLB

Photo by Michael BaronAndy McCullough of the Star Ledger is reporting that the Mets should finalize a minor league deal with Chris Young by the end of the week.  Young was excellent in his four starts for the Mets last year but it seems like an awful fast return from the same surgery Johan Santana had and took twice as long to return.  It doesn't really impact them to bring...

Chris Young and Mets Pitching Depth

The Mets brought RHP Chris Young back today on a minor league deal. Although Young had the same surgery last season that has sidelined Johan Santana for nearly two years, some reports optimistically have him back on the mound by late May. Again, we know all the depth issues the team has, which makes me wonder if they would also consider Andy Sonnanstine. Sonnanstine is now...

David Wright lines a single up the middle in his first at-bat!!! — New York Mets (@Mets) March 26, 2012

Cardinals can't get past Mets

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -- David Wright singled and made a fine fielding play in his first spring training game, helping the New York Mets beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 Monday. Wright had missed the entire Grapefruit League schedule because of a torn abdominal muscle. He lined Jake Westbrook's full-count pitch into left field in the first inning. He grounded out to short in the...

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) -- Freddie Freeman hit two home runs, Michael Bourn also connected and the Atlanta Braves beat the New York Mets 7-5 Tuesday in a matchup of teams that will meet next week on opening day.
