The Philadelphia Phillies wouldn’t dare trade the best lefty pitcher they have, would they? You’ve all heard the rumor that Hamels could be on his way out of Philly and that we’ve already started fielding offers, right? Hamels will be a free agent at the end of the season and he’ll be poised to make a lot of money. He’ll probably get better offers from other teams because Philadelphia’s payroll might just be too high already.
The questions don’t become whether or not Cole Hamels should be traded; it becomes do the Phillies want to keep Hamels long term? This is not a Dwight Howard situation because Hamels hasn’t said he isn’t coming back, it’s all speculation.
Some of the people who don’t think the trade will happen say that Hamels won’t resign, which means no one wants him because he won’t resign there either. If Hamels is traded to the Yankees, Dodgers, or Rangers, why wouldn’t he resign there? Hamels and the Phillies are almost certainly millions of dollars apart on a deal and that’s why I’m writing this article.
Cole Hamels will make a lot of money in his next deal. New York, Anaheim, Los Angeles, or some other deep pocketed team will offer him the big dollars. The hope in Philly is that the Fightins will have a chance to match any offer and that Cole will stay because he’s only ever known Phillies baseball.
Whatever the price on Hamels is, the Phillies need to pay it. Rebuilding is not the direction this team needs to go. The outfield is solid. Upgrades at third base and shortstop need to happen soon, but it’s not the end of the world. If Hamels remains in the rotation and the Phillies can add some youth to the back end of it, they can still be a 90-win team….next year.
Cole Hamels has always been a Philly. If general manager Ruben Amaro is smart, he’ll still be on after the trade deadline and during spring training next year.
