It's been reported that the Mets have signed Al Reyes to a minor league contract. The plan is for Reyes to build up his arm strength in Binghamton before joining the team. Reyes with his 26 saves last year instantly becomes the front runner to close until Wagner returns. Despite having a major league contract on the table Reyes opted for the Mets, probably because he has the opportunity to close and returns to the NL. In 2006 he was with the Cards and posted a 2.15 ERA in 65 games. This is a low risk/high reward signing and could result in the pen being significantly improved......."At this point in time, we're going to have to be looking for guys who aren't having the best years," said Mets general manager Omar Minaya. "It's, hopefully, a change of scenery type thing."Reyes will first report to Double-A Binghamton. Once he builds up his arm strength there, the Mets will attempt to shoehorn him into a role in their bullpen. source Star Ledger
