Obviously, last night is not the only sampling of the reigning NL West Champion Arizona Diamondbacks. However, conquering the “Freak” in San Francisco Giants P Tim Lincecum for five runs is no small order. Tattooing his usually dominant array of pitches for two first inning home runs showed a microcosm of power that is to come. Players like 1B Paul Goldschmidt are guys that not many fans outside the desert have heard of but will make some noise throughout the 2012 season. Starting with CF Chris Young, who is due for a resurgence, and later culminating in a blast by Goldschmidt, Tim Lincecum was tagged for three runs in the first before settling down. After the Giants tied at three, Lincecum was again hit for two. Lincecum has repeatedly had trouble with the Diamondbacks, and will likely not be the last ace to due so. RF Justin Upton is going to battle with Miami Marlins RF Giancarlo Stanton for what will likely be a two horse race for best right fielder in the National League, while there is a solid left field combo between LF Geraldo Parra and newly acquired LF Jason Kubel. This team has enough starting pitching to win games and can take the division at any given juncture late in the season. These two teams look forward to fighting it out for the division, which will have no runaway favorite especially since the Los Angeles Dodgers have shown their mettle early on. The Arizona  Diamondbacks have potential in droves, with a young starting pitching core and enough of a veteran presence to provide these young hitters with the knowledge to knock out top pitching. This team may not have the huge names or even a Cy Young presence this season, but with the way they are expected to perform there may be some Silver Sluggers, Gold Gloves, and towering home runs all year.

That Could Have Been a Lot Worse

Willie Bloomquist, who really shouldn’t even be batting leadoff, hit a single off Tim Lincecum to get things going for the Diamondbacks. The next batter, Chris Young, hit a home run. And that pretty much set the tone for the game; Lincecum gave up a couple bombs in the first inning, and ultimately couldn’t get through six innings. His fastball velocity sat around 90, topping...

New lineup no problem for Young, Goldschmidt

PHOENIX -- Diamondbacks teammates Paul Goldschmidt and Chris Young were both a little out of place in Friday's opening-day lineup against the San Francisco Giants. D-backs manager Kirk Gibson slotted Young, the center fielder, second in the batting order, a spot he hadn't hit in all spring and had hit in only once in 2011, exactly one year earlier. Goldschmidt, meanwhile...

Projecting the Series: Giants vs Diamondbacks

Opening Day is finally here for the Giants and with it the first installment of my attempts to handicap how the series will play out. Normally for this I have the statistics from the season in progress to go off of when doing this but seeing as the season hasn't started yet, I will use the ZiPS Projections and the Baseball Musings Lineup Analysis tool with lineups...
