The Dodgers finally released their roster for the 2013 NLDS (‘finally’ because they had less than an hour to get it in), and it included some surprises. Good surprises.
Hyun Jin Ryu
No surprises with the starting rotation or the bullpen, except for Chris Capuano, who managed to beat out Edinson Volquez, Carlos Marmol, and Brandon League. Hard to think that his two pen appearances (2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K) to end the season were the deciding factor here. Trust is the most important thing, and they could trust Capuano but not the other three.
Also, Hyun Jin Ryu will start Game 3, with Ricky Nolasco slated for Game 4 … for now.
C – A.J. Ellis
1B – Adrian Gonzalez
2B – Mark Ellis
3B – Juan Uribe
SS – Hanley Ramirez
LF – Carl Crawford
CF – Skip Schumaker
RF – Yasiel Puig
C – Tim Federowicz
3B – Michael Young
SS – Dee Gordon
OF – Andre Ethier
OF – Scott Van Slyke
UT – Nick Punto
Zero problems here because Andre Ethier can’t play the field or run the bases well.
It’s basically how I wanted the roster constructed, though I’m surprised they went with Dee Gordon over Jerry Hairston Jr. Not complaining at all, just surprised.
Solid choices by the front office and/or manager, and it honestly makes me feel better that they’re fielding what I think is the best roster possible.
With the roster settled and everything optimal, expect Mark Ellis and Skip Schumaker to lead the offense, Ricky Nolasco to lead the rotation, and Chris Capuano to lead the bullpen.
BEST OF MAXIM
The Dodgers boast the highest payroll in Major League Baseball, with ten players on their roster raking in more than $10 million a year. But in the midst of the big-spending ball club, overshadowed by star power and dollar signs, is A.J. Ellis.
The Dodgers catcher grinded out ten seasons in minor league ball before finally catching on full-time with Los Angeles in 2012. Bill Plaschke...

The idea for player panic ratings has been stewing in my head since the last playoff appearance for the Dodgers, because while fans go nuts at players during the regular season, they absolutely lose sanity during the postseason. I understand that, because there’s more at stake, but sane people let it go after they calm down, while insane people let it dictate...
Yasiel Puig's transition from Cuba to the Major Leagues has been a whirlwind. Finding residency outside of Cuba, becoming eligible for Major League free agency, signing with the Dodgers, climbing through the minors, making his debut, narrowly missing an All-Star Game berth, and now the postseason. But he's handled it all like a veteran for the most part. Last night...
The Dodgers' success isn't built on offense, which is why the loss of Matt Kemp for the postseason and Andre Ethier from the starting lineup was never viewed as major.
Big, yes. Major, not really.
The Dodgers' strength lies in their pitching, in Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke. So although they displayed some clutch hitting in beating the Atlanta Braves 6-1 Thursday...

Thursday marks the beginning of what should be a great NLDS (National League Divisional Series) match-up between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves. The Braves enter the series with home field advantage after earning the number two seed in the National League.
The Dodgers enter the postseason with arguably the best starting rotation as the Braves enter with one of the more...
ATLANTA (AP) -- Clayton Kershaw struck out 12 during seven dominant innings, Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run homer and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the bumbling Atlanta Braves 6-1 in Game 1 of the NL division series Thursday night.
The Dodgers jumped out to a 5-0 lead by the fourth against Kris Medlen, taking advantage of some shoddy Atlanta defense even though the Braves were generously...
The city of Los Angeles is known for any things and putting on a great show on the baseball field has lately been one of them. L.A is home to two of the most popular MLB teams in the league; the Angels and the Dodgers. It’s funny how two of Major League baseballs brightest stars end up in the same city. Mike Trout of the Angels and Yasiel Puig of the Dodgers, have been putting...
Did Don Mattingly really do that? Yes, yes he did.
The title isn’t meant to be disrespectful to the Braves, because yes, they did what they had to do and they’re a good team … but it never ever should have gone the way it did. It was just ridiculously bad decision making.
In the top of the seventh inning, Skip Schumaker and Michael Young somehow got on with balls they hit a...
The Dodgers beat the Braves in Game 1 of the 2013 NLDS, which is awesome, so look at these moving things.
Evan Gattis did this thing.
Brian Wilson is weird.
Matt Kemp has hands. Yes.
Magic Johnson must not want his team to win the World Series. Yeah, I know. Crazy, right? After all the team went through this season with the poor start and all the injuries it would seem that he would want to give anything to keep it going and win the big one.
Wait...maybe that's what he's doing with the promise he made on Leno the other night.
The owner of...
Atlanta fans bust out a serious rendition of The Chop as the Braves play host to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS. Turner Field gets raucous.
The Braves and Dodgers have taken very different routes to the postseason; Atlanta has consistently led the NL East, pulling away from the Nationals in mid-season and never relinquishing their lead. The Dodgers were awful in the first half and were still in last place on July 1st, from which point they went 54-27 and won the NL West at a canter. Lineup consistency has been a real...
Before the Cardinals' hot September gave them the best record in the National League, many fans, reporters and analysts anticipated the Dodgers and Braves playing for the pennant and a trip to the World Series. Instead, these two clubs will be playing for a spot in the NLCS. This series features the two best pitching staffs in MLB based on ERA. Atlanta led the majors with a...
