In his column for the Boston Globe, Nick Cafardo lists Jason Bay among eight players he expects to “come back big in 2012.” In 123 games in 2011, Bay hit .245 with a .329 OBP, 12 home runs and 57 RBI and a career-low .703 OPS. However, he hit .313 with a .954 OPS after September 1 and was named NL Player of the Week for September 5-11. Bay just completed the second year of a four year, $66 million contract he signed with the Mets before the 2010 season in which he has a full no-trade clause. He will earn $16 million in both 2012 and 2013, but if he records 600 plate appearances in 2012 or 500 plate appearances in both 2012 and 2013, his option for 2014 will automatically vest at $17 million. Otherwise, the Mets hold a $3 million buyout for 2014.
