Phillies outfielder Juan Pierre has never been a power hitter in his career. With just 17 career home runs in his 13-year career, Pierre has always been noted as a singles hitter and speed demon on the base paths. Pierre played at the height of his career during the steroid era of baseball. In an interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer, Pierre talked about how he has played the game so well, but not able to show up on the super stats pages. Pierre, however, dropped a gem of a quote regarding his play. “With all the computers, the cybergenics [sabermetrics], whatever they do, I think I rate the lowest possible in those things. The things I do don’t show up in box scores. Sacrifice bunting doesn’t make any sense to do. They don’t look at the guy going first to third or taking that extra bag.” Pierre, of course, meant to say sabermetrics, the  specialized analysis of baseball through objective evidence, especially baseball stats that measure in-game activity. Cybergenics is a w...

Hamels Leads Phillies to Series Win Over Rockies

Hamels was Hamels on Sunday. (AP) The Phillies started off their six-game, post-all-star break road trip by winning the opening series against the Rockies. On Sunday, Cole Hamels shut down Colorado, leading the Phillies to a 5-1 victory. It was the first series victory for the Phillies since they beat Colorado at home nearly a month ago – June 19, 20, and 21. HAMELS PROVES WHY...

More Injuries, More Savery: Raul Valdes Hits the Disabled List; Joe Savery Up from AAA

Well, at least it wasn't someone TOO important.  The latest 2012 Phillies casualty to the disabled list is left-handed reliever Raul Valdes.   Valdes has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right hip strain, and left-handed reliever Joe Savery has been recalled from AAA Lehigh Valley to take his place. Valdes has been moderately effective, going 2-2 with a 3.80...

Hamels, Pence lead Phillies to 5-1 win

Back-to-back wins! Well, the Phillies are still in last place, but Cole Hamels, with scouts in the stands, was the real deal on Sunday in a 5-1 win over the Colorado Rockies. It was their first series win in a month. Hamels (11-4) went eight innings, giving up six hits, one run, one walk and seven strikeouts. With a tentative 2-0 lead in the fourth, Hunter Pence hit a three-run bomb...

Images of Ryan Howard's first at-bat

I know this is a week old, but I used the All-Star Break to, well, take a break. I think with a 37-50 first half, we all needed a break. Anyway, before the unsettling finish to the Phillies' 5-0 loss to the Braves last Friday, Ryan Howard made a triumphant return. (Philliedelphia/Kevin Durso) I was standing behind section 130 and was able to get this picture (above), which...

Hamels leads Phillies to second straight victory

DENVER - Phillies left-hander Cole Hamels is facing an uncertain future. His struggling team might trade him by the July 31 deadline. Or by then, they might re-sign Hamels to a lucrative contract to keep him from becoming a free agent. Then again, Hamels might leave as a free agent after the season, once he sizes up his market. With business matters swirling about him, Hamels...

Ruiz, Utley, and Worley with Multi-RBI Night; Phils Defeat Rockies 7-5

Image courtesy of Matt Sautter  The Phillies were looking for a quality start from Vance Worley tonight to snap out of their five-game losing streak. Impatient at-bats last night led to a 6-2 loss, and a terrible way to kick off the second half of the season. Thankfully, an outburst of offense gave the Phillies a 4-0 lead in the first inning. First, Chase Utley singled to left...

De Fratus & Brown Continue Strong Rehab Efforts

On Friday, two players that could potentially provide some help to the big league Phillies roster this season were in action with the organization’s Gulf Coast League club, rehabbing their injuries. Right-handed reliever Justin De Fratus (elbow strain) and outfielder Domonic Brown (knee sprain) both looked good in their efforts down Florida. De Fratus, who threw a scoreless...

Phils preparing an official offer for Hamels

The Phillies are starting the second-half of their season on the field Friday night in Colorado. They may also be starting - or ending - a major chapter in their history off the field with an offer to Cole Hamels.

Phillies Kick Off Second Half With Weekend Set In Colorado

The Phillies had one of their first halves in ten years, going 37-50 headed into the All-Star Break. Well it's only been four days since they played, but I'm sick and tired of seeing this team playing like crap as well as being sick and tired of being negative about this team. So for the beginning of this second half I am going to be positive about this team because it...

Phillies preparing an offer to Cole Hamels

In the past couple of weeks there has been a lot of rumors surrounding left handed pitcher Cole Hamels. It's been said that the Phillies, in case they become sellers, could deal him as long as they can't sign him to a long-term deal. Yesterday, Jayson Stark of ESPN.com said that the Phillies are preparing a “substantial offer” to Hamels to see if they can sign him in...
