The Padres took the lead in the first as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Chase Headley hits an RBI double, knocking in Will Venable, who had started the inning off with a bunt single, then reached second base as Phils’ starter Joe Blanton misread a slow doubleplay grounder to the mound by Mark Kotsay, allowing it to bounce over his head, for a force attempt, fielding error, giving the Padres a 1-0 lead, while sending Kotsay, who had been safe at first on the error as he beat shortstop’s Jimmy Rollins throw to first, would stop at third base. The Padres then took a 2-0 lead as Nick Hundley hits a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Kotsay from third, before Venable is thrown out trying to move up to third base, 9-5, on a good throw by center fielder Shane Victorino, for the inning’s second out.
