Philly fans have a reputation for booing anyone who doesn’t hit .300 with 40 home runs every year, and while that’s maybe a slight exaggeration, you do have to play well to earn your wings in Philly. Philly is a blue-collar city, so you also have to play your hardest. You don’t give it one hundred percent, you have no chance. Just ask Todd Pinkston.
Guys who just missed the list include those immensely untalented ballplayers like Wes Helms, David Bell, and Abraham Nunez, guys who really didn’t do anything to earn their worth in the city. A top candidate to join the list in the future would be Jayson Werth, a ridiculously talented right fielder who could do it all but chose to go to perennial-last place Washington because of the $126 million he was offered, rather than stay in Philly and play for a winner.
