*Phillies signed old buddy Joe Thurston to a minor league contract after his release from the Astros. Joe is 32 years old and plays 2nd and 3rd base as well as some LF. He'll add depth at Triple-A with the Phillies entire starting infield already injured or likely to be. In 7 MLB seasons he's played in 184 games and hit .226/.629. In other words, not very good. In 2006 he appeared in 18 games with the Phils.*Yesterday Vance Worley was roughed up by the lowly Minnesota Twins offense, surrendering 11 runs (5 earned) in 4 innings. Can't be having that, as the Phils might not be able to score 11 runs total in 5 consecutive ball games.*Who in the world thought before Spring Training started that we would care about the health of Freddy Galvis so much? Well, we do. Valdez traded, Martinez broken foot, Utley pronounced dead, options at 2nd base thin. Galvis is far from a savior, but his bruised foot (from a foul ball) is something to monitor.*Former Mitchell Report darling Davi...

Phillies Nation TV: Utley, Clearwater, Prospects

On the latest edition of Phillies Nation TV, we talk, who else, Chase Utley. What’s with the lack of communication within the organization? Kind of odd that Ruben Amaro says one thing, Utley another. We discuss. Also, I got a chance to talk with John Timberlake (yes, Justin’s uncle), the Clearwater Threshers GM and Director of Florida Operations. We discussed looking over the...

Here’s How a Hamels Deal Gets Done…

We’re about 200 days from major league free agents being able to sign with teams other than their own. One such player is Cole Hamels, whose contract with the Phillies ends after the 2012 season. If Hamels isn’t re-signed within six days of the end of the 2012 World Series, he can sign elsewhere.I’ve been documenting Hamels’ contract status for almost a year. It began last...

Former Player Says Chase Utley Needs HGH

David Segui, who was named in the Mitchell Report, said that Chase Utley would benefit from taking HGH. Segui spoke on 94 WIP. "It gives you quality of life is what it gives you," he said. "It doesn't enhance your performance, it just allows you to move around, and your joints don't hurt. And people that have arthritis, and suffer from arthritis, I used to...

The Chase Utley Scuttlebutt – Why Fans Care

When Chase Utley complained on Sunday about all of the speculation in the media about his condition, it struck me as funny. Here’s a guy who never speaks about anything, and wouldn’t even tell anyone what specialist he was going to see last week when he left camp, and now he wants to complain because people are talking about him. With a player as beloved as Chase Utley is, you’d...

Lee Solid vs. Pirates; Galvis Day-to-Day

Freddy Galvis.Cliff Lee looks to be ready to rock. He struck out three, giving up three hits over six innings in the Phillies 5-4 win over the Pirates in Clearwater. Lee did not allow a run, but Antonio Bastardo did. He was responsible for three runs just a few days after returning from elbow tightness that was attributed to dehydration. You can stash this in the “It’s Only Spring...

Writer’s Roundtable, Part 2: Press On

Vance Worley will look to repeat his rookie season. (AP)The grass is getting greener, the birds are retreating back to the Northeast, and my allergies are flaring up; these are, of course, the telltale signs of baseball’s return. The comments on both the blog and our Facebook page have been heating up with both optimism for the 2012 season but also some legitimate concerns for...

Corey Seidman on ESPN Williamsport

Corey Seidman joined 1050 ESPN Radio in Williamsport earlier this week to talk Phillies with host Trevor Turner. They mostly focused on Chase Utley’s injury and its implications on the team, but also delved into Domonic Brown’s prospects for playing this year and Ryan Madson’s unfortunate turn of events.

Morneau lifts Twins over Worley, Phillies, 11-7

Justin Morneau continued his recent resurgence at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a two-run home run in the Minnesota Twins' 11-7 win over the Philadelphia Phillies Wednesday. Morneau has spent time at designated hitter the last week, trying to recapture his swing. He's also left the door open for a permanent shift away from first base. It's working. The former American...
