According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York the New York Mets received news on Monday afternoon that an MRI revealed that lefty reliever Tim Byrdak has a torn anterior capsule in his shoulder.  According to Rubin:

Surgery is a possibility, although treatment for the injury has not been finalized, according to the team. Starters Johan Santana and Chris Young both previously tore their anterior capsules and underwent surgery as a result.

Byrdak was placed on the disabled list prior to Friday’s game in San Diego after complaining of shoulder soreness. The left-hander suffered the injury after throwing a slider in Arizona on July 26.

Well. This stinks.  You have to feel bad for Byrdak, who signed one-year, $1 million contract last September, meaning he is a free-agent at the end of this year.  To be honest, I wonder if this injury is due to his massive workload; Byrdak led the majors with 56 appearances.

Over 30 2/3 innings of work for the Mets this year, the 38-year-old reliever allowed 15 earned runs on 18 hits and 18 walks while striking out 34 batters:

The Mets promoted LHP Garrett Olsen from Triple-A to replace Byrdak on the roster.
