Between all the stuff that’s been going on in Boston since this past Monday’s horrific attacks, and the terrible fertilizer factory explosion in Waco, Texas, that’s claimed upwards of 30 lives, it’s been a really bad week, to say the least. So let’s try and lighten the mood a bit with a tremendous feel good story from the world of baseball. The Cincinnati Reds employed a fine young man by the name of Ted Kremer as one of their batboys last season, and this past Thursday Kremer made a return to the Reds dugout for their game against the Marlins. Thing about Ted is, unlike most of the batboys found in the Major Leagues, he has Down’s Syndrome. Despite only serving as batboy for two games, Ted’s infectious spirit and bottomless well of enthusiasm has endeared him to the entire ball club. While working the game against Miami, with a smile on his face as always, Ted had two very minor requests—one was for the team to record 11 strikeouts so he could score some free pizza, and for 3rd baseman Todd Frazier to hit a home run. You can probably guess what happened. In the bottom of the sixth Frazier parked a John Maine offering over the fence in center field, his fifth of the year, to give Cincy an 11-1 lead, a score that would hold up to the final out. While rounding the bases, Frazier knew what to expect when he finished his home run trot. From the Cincinnati Enquirer… “He’s so funny, he said, ‘C’mon, hit me a home run, I love you.’ I said, ‘I love you too, I’ll hit you one,’” Frazier recalled after the team’s 11-1 victory over the Marlins. Frazier’s 421-foot shot on an 0-1 count in the sixth inning off of John Maine easily cleared the in center field, and even running around the bases, Frazier knew what was awaiting him at the plate. “It was great how excited — that look,” Frazier said. “I started smiling even before I hit home plate because I knew it. They said he forgot to pick the bat up, so the umpire was yelling at him. It was such a great a great guy. You can’t get mad — even if you have a terrible day. How can you be mad when you’ve got a guy like that around?” Here’s the video of Frazier’s home run. and subsequent heartwarming moment with Ted, via MLB,com… There, now doesn’t that restore your faith in humanity just a little bit?
