Last night, New York Mets reliever Manny Acosta tossed two innings of relief, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out four: Following a David Wright two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth — which cut the Mets deficit to 6-3– Acosta surrendered three runs on four hits in the next half inning. Photo by Michael G. Baron Manny allowed the first two batter to reach base with a single and walk respectively before a fielders choice grounder placed runners on first and third with one-out. Chase Headley followed the ground out with an RBI single down the right field line before Andy Parrino plated two more runs with a single into center giving the Padres a 9-3 lead they would not relinquish. With his three runs allowed on Thursday night, Acosta has now allowed 12 earned runs over his last five appearances (6 IP), watching his ERA rise to a robust 10.80: Seriously.  Why is this guy on the roster?  Hasn’t he had enough chances to try and turn things around?  I seriously hope the next time I use the word ‘relief’ and Acosta’s name in the same sentence it will be when describing how I feel after his demotion.  I realize the team may not be ripe with options to replace Acosta but hopefully once Jenrry Mejia returns from injury he will be able to replace the 31-year-old.  Lord knows Manny’s shoes won’t be tough to fill and Mejia came out of his second rehab start yesterday without incident.  According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York:
Photo by Michael G. Baron Jenrry Mejia made his second start of the season with Double-A Binghamton on Thursday — his fourth minor league start overall in his comeback from Tommy John surgery last May. Mejia went five innings against the New Britain Rock Cats, giving up four runs (all earned) on five hits, with five strikeouts and three walks. He threw 75 pitches, 44 for strikes. Mets manager Terry Collins has indicated that Mejia could help the big-league club in relief at some point this season, despite the fact that he’s currently starting in the minor leagues.”
