Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers told the Arizona Republic on Saturday he has told outfielder Justin Upton he may be traded.

Towers said he told Upton: " 'If something gets close.' I said, 'you'll be a part of the process. I'm not going to shock you with something.'

"I told him you should look at it in a good way that people like you, not just the Diamondbacks, but you're perceived very, very well throughout baseball."

Added Towers: "I listen on everybody. We're in the information-gathering business."

Towers did not say what teams he has talked to and what he is seeking in return. The Republic reported the Diamondbacks have been looking for help at third base for at least a month.

"I think there's room for improvement there," he said. "I'd like to do something. But it takes two to tango in a trade. I think I know what our needs are. I think I know what can help this ballclub. It's just finding the right match."

After having a career-best season in 2011, Upton has struggled this season, hitting .268 with seven home runs and 37 RBIs. Last season, the career .276 hitter had a .289 batting average with 31 homers and 88 RBIs.

FoxSports.com reported Saturday that Upton has scratched the Oakland Athletics off his no-trade list. He already is signed to a long-term contract, making $6.75 million this season, $9.75 million next season, $14.25 million in 2014 and $14.5 million in '15.
