With player movement in full swing, I’ll try to get this updated (it’s always available on the right side-bar) as often as I can.
First, let’s take a look at our payroll situation post-Papelbon.
The players are in order of team control (oh, hey Ryan Howard), and in secondary order by salary amount. And it goes out as far as we have salary obligations.
Some comments:
Hmm…so we will be paying a 35-year-old Ryan Howard, 36-year-old Cliff Lee and a 34-year-old Jonathan Papelbon $63 million dollars in 2015. I guess we’ll worry about that when we get to it…
If we are able to sustain this level of payroll – I don’t see any reason why our age will be a HUGE problem in the coming years as we should be able to back-fill with free agents. As long as you have a handful of players playing in their first 3 years, you can pretty much create a whole team with that much money.
We probably have about $20 mill more to play with. But it could be more if...

(PHOTO: NJ.com)Under the new terms of MLB’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, teams that make future moves for Type-A free agent relief pitchers will not be forced to part with a first-round pick in the draft, according to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com.This means teams can sign Ryan Madson, Francisco Rodriguez, Heath Bell, and other top relievers this offseason without penalty...
Finding a closer
Jonathan Papelbon is gone to the Phillies. I have mixed feelings. About.comBaseball listed Pap as number 1 on its site of free agent relievers, and with good reason. Despite his bad ending in 2011, he had 30-plus saves for the sixth consecutive year. The only Sox reliever that he really can be compared to is Dick Radatz in the long forgotten days of the early 60's. When the Monster...
Red Sox Mailbag: Retaining Tim Wakefield Makes Sense, While Team Should Follow Dustin Pedroia's Lead
The purge continues. Each week, more remnants of the 2011 Red Sox fall to the wayside. Since the last mailbag, Jonathan Papelbon quickly snatched up a four-year deal with the Phillies, and the Red Sox announced sweeping changes to its medical staff. It is clear that change is the operative word for the coming season. The question is, how far will those changes go? Papelbon is gone...
