Since they have not released him, it is apparent that the Mets think Jason Bay has a future. However, it’s impossible for those of us who don’t personally owe him at least $19 million to get that same opinion by watching him in the present. So, the only thing left to do is examine the past and hope that there’s someone in baseball’s rich history that we can point to as an example of bouncing back. Unfortunately that person doesn’t exist. I searched for corner outfielders with at least 1,000 PA in their age 31-33 seasons with an OPS+ of 95 or worse. This covers Bay’s time with the Mets, in which he has 1,105 PA and an OPS+ of 91. I sorted the list by batting average and Bay’s .231 mark is the worst of 44 players in our sample. But the list wasn’t designed to center on AVG. Bay’s 91 OPS+ ranked tied for 21st or right in the middle of our sample. He is tied with Jerry Martin and Emil Brown. Martin was primarily a fourth outfielder, and a pretty good one, but he had a few sea...

With mustaches on sticks, New Yorkers beg Keith Hernandez to keep his (video)

If you haven’t heard, Keith Hernandez, a New York Mets legend-turned respected and admired analyst on team telecasts, recently said he has been considering shaving off his trademark mustache, saying that he just might show up for the final game of the season with what would be a disconcerting absence of the ever-present soup-strainer upon [...]

BJ Upton to Mets? Nice Thought But Not Likely

With no playoffs in sight for the Mets, it’s not too early to start thinking about how the Mets could improve their team this offseason. The Mets will sure be in the market for any bargain player they can get, but one guy that has been mentioned for the Mets has been Rays centerfielder BJ Upton. Of course, a guy with Upton’s athleticism and potential would make him desirable...

MMO Prospect Pulse: Hansel Robles Is One To Watch

Hansel Robles was large and in charge last night in front of the Coney Island faithful. What an amazing game by Hansel Robles last night who tossed a complete game shutout and struck out ten batters to defeat the Hudson Valley Renegades 4-0 and take Game One of the Semi Final round of the New York Penn League Championship Series. Mets Merized Online’s Peter Shapiro who has been...

Mets have blueprint for success in 2012 Orioles

No one had this recipe in their cookbook. The Baltimore Orioles haven’t made the playoffs, the past 14 seasons, has never operated as a ‘big market team’ payroll wise, and has been consistently been ranked in the lower ranks of organizational talent. No, this was not the recipe for success. We’re not going to offer up any magic spells here. No, we’re just going to break...

Game Preview: Nationals @ Mets

After a disappointing series with the Braves, the Mets host the Nationals in Queens. Collin McHugh will get the start tonight for the Mets. He is 0-1 over two starts with a 3.27 ERA as he has allowed 4 ER in 11.0 innings of work. His MLB debut was seven innings of shutout ball, and sadly his last start was not that as he allowed 4 ER in 4 innings. The Nationals have no current numbers...
