Chase Utley must be activated from the disabled list by July 2nd according to MLB rules. There is some hope, however, that his return could come sooner than that.

Reports circulating for the past 24 hours have the former All Star with bad knees making his return to the Phillies on Wednesday. Chase Utley’s return this year may be more about bolstering team morale than any significant offensive contributions.

Utley missed 56 games last season because of his bad knees, and when he returned to the lineup was a shadow of his former self.

Chase Utley has been on an official rehab assignment in Florida since June 12th.

Ryan Howard, the other injured Phillies star who has yet to play a game this season said he was hopeful that he could begin an official rehab assignment sometime next week. If that’s the case, like Utley, Howard would have 20 days to be activated to the big league roster.

Ryan Howard, who is recovering from a ruptured Achilles’ tendon and an infection at the surgical site, has been taking part in inter squad games and some extended spring training games.

With the Phillies no longer in last place, and playing somewhat better, it will be interesting to see how Howard and Utley’s returns affect the team. Many fans have held onto the hope that once the two All Stars returned the Phillies would be able to go on a run and get back into the playoff picture.

It’s almost time to put those theories to the test.Similar Posts:
