The locker room incident involving Jordany Valdespin’s t-shirt before Wednesday’s game has broken out and become a “thing.” In what probably doesn’t count as his rookie hazing, Valdepin’s plain white t-shirt he wore to the ballpark before Wednesday’s win in San Francisco was jokingly altered by some veterans to remind Valdespin of the club’s self-imposed dress code of collared shirts. The sleeves were shredded, and the back sported “El Hombre” and his uniform number 1. ”NY Loves Valdy” graced the front of the shirt. According to reports, ‘Spin was initially angry at the violation, but calmed down about as quickly as he flared up after a private conversation with David Wright about the incident. Valdespin was later seen wearing the shirt out of the clubhouse, laughing and joking with teammates and even posing for pictures in his new duds. While understanding of the stunt, Valdespin reflected on his options if the situation were reversed. “No, no, no, no. I’d never do that,” he

People not named Jenrry Mejia: The future of the Mets’ pen

If you ask me, the worst thing the Mets could have done this year… would have been to thrust Matt Harvey into the big-league team from the start of the season.  They didn’t, but could you imagine what that might have done to Matt Harvey’s career prospects?  Actually, we all can.  Because the Mets were good enough to give us an example… his name is Jenrry Mejia. The...

Hakuna Tejada! Ruben and Niese lead Mets past Giants

Wednesday night’s affair in San Francisco brought about perhaps the most inexplicable Mets win of the year. But it was a win and we’ll take all of those that we can get around here. Twenty (20!) Mets reached base against a collection of Giants pitchers that started with Matt Cain and included four others. New York had nine hits, drew nine walks, had a batter get hit by a pitch...

Defense Must Be A Priority For Mets’ Off-Season

When I was a small child, the Mets were contenders every year. From age four through age eleven – with the slight blip of 1974 – the Mets were always in the hunt for the division, almost guaranteed to finish over .500. Everyone knew why: pitching, of course. Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, and Jon Matlack at the top of the rotations, complemented at points by Nolan Ryan, Gary...

Mets-Padres Preview

With a wide gulf separating them from the top of the NL East, the New York Mets need R.A. Dickey pitching at the top of his game if they harbor any hopes of climbing back into contention. Dickey's most recent outing was quite encouraging. The Mets will hand the ball to the knuckleballer Friday in the opener of a three-game road series against the San Diego Padres. Dickey ...
