Trying to find something interesting, funny, or smile-worthy from yesterday’s playoff-hopes-extinguishing loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks isn’t easy. The Giants, who got their asses handed to them 15-2, looked nothing like the team we’ve become accustomed to watching the past two years.

Great pitching? Nope. A franchise-record 13 walks is very uncharacteristic.

Great catching? LOL! (Hector Sanchez allowed three stolen bases in three attempts.)

Hitting? Um, this is the Giants we’re talking about.

Great defense? Ooooh, now you’re onto something.

While I wouldn’t consider this play “great defense,” it certainly qualifies for a second (and third, and fourth…) look.

Giants second baseman Mike Fontenot, all of about 165 pounds, was playing second base in the first inning and — with Arizona runners at second and third with one out — Gerardo Parra grounded one up the middle. The 5’8″ infielder took two steps to his right and smacked face-first into the backside of umpire Bruce Dreckman.

MLB doesn’t keep personal vitals on its umpires, but Dreckman probably weighs twice as much as Fontenot, who laid crouched on his hands and knees for a minute or two before getting up to shake the plaster loose from his head.

Afterwards, Fontenot walked away from Dreckman (who had called time and was standing over the second baseman), his body language saying both, “Next time, stay the f*ck out of the way, fat ass,” and “I’m sure glad I have insurance.”
