Johan Santana is scheduled to make about $25 million dollars each of the next two years. There’s also an option for 2014, which adds another $25 million if he reaches awards incentives and/or innings threshold. The combination of Santana’s health and the Mets reduced payroll make this a very punishing financial commitment. I think Ben Nicholson-Smith of MLBTR said it best by opining the Mets won the deal that sent Philip Humber, Carlos Gomez, Kevin Mulvey, and Deolis Guerra to the Twins for Santana, but lost the contract. Could you blame the Mets for giving him a 7-year deal? They were coming off a collapse due to their starting pitching falling apart in September. Their crosstown rivals were hot on Santana’s trail, as were the Red Sox. When they acquired his services without giving up their top hitting prospect (Fernando Martinez) or top pitching prospect (Mike Pelfrey), they couldn’t lose the deal over a failure to negotiate a contract. No one, including me, was against the ...

Mets Under The Radar Prospects: Robert Carson and Chase Huchingson

MLB.com’s John Star released the 2012 Mets Organizational Preview which includes the Top 20 prospects. He speculates that the future of the Mets’ rotation will knock on the door of Citi Field this season and lists Wheeler, Harvey and Familia as the Mets top three prospects with outfielders Brandon Nimmo and Cesar Puello rounding out the top five. Here are two players...

If that's all Torres is then Damon makes sense...

Jon Heyman reported yesterday that he was told a competing exec. believed Andres Torres is nothing more then a 5th outfielder. The Mets actions may be confirming that belief, first going after Cody Ross and now monitoring the left handed outfield market. Ankiel and Fokudome could platoon with Torres but Damon might be the perfect fit. Damon would be able to hit at the top of the...

Mets Web-Dings: Ike Davis Is Ready To Make His Mark

Here is part of a great post by Michael Friere of Macks Mets who weighs in on Ike Davis: The Mets drafted Ike with the 18th overall pick, in the first round of the 2008 Major League Baseball draft out of Arizona State University. Advance billing on Ike was that he was a solid hitter, with decent amount of power and an excellent glove. Plus, Ike was left handed, which is considered...

Mets Eye Candy: The 1962 Edition

With the New York Mets celebrating their 50th Anniversary in 2012, I’ll probably end up doing 4-5 1962 Editions of my “Mets Eye Candy” feature. Do you know the story about Hall of Fame writer Leonard Koppett during that 1962 season? While burning the midnight oil at his desk in the newsroom of the NY Post, his phone rang at two in the in morning. “I understand...

New York Mets Likely to Assign Lead Off Duties to Andres Torres

As we gear up for Spring Training and the promise of real baseball, the New York Mets are surprisingly set throughout their 25-man roster.  There are plenty of questions surrounding the organization, but on the field the New York Mets have most of their rotation set and they have a very good idea of who will be filling out the lineup on Opening Day.  One of the final decisions...

Mets To Announce Josh Lewin Will Replace Wayne Hagin In Radio Booth

Bob Klapisch of the Bergen Record is hearing that the Mets are ready to announce Josh Lewin as the replacement for Wayne Hagin in the WFAN radio booth for the 2012 season. Klapisch says that the former Texas Rangers broadcaster would be signed to a one-year deal. It was Neil Best of Newsday, who first reported that Lewin had emerged as a leading candidate for the job. Lewin, 43,...

Woody Guthrie and the 2012 Mets

You can find a lot of stuff on YouTube but I found out this morning you cannot find Glenn Close singing the National Anthem. I want to write about “The Star Spangled Banner” today and this, I thought, was a good way to do this on a Mets-themed blog. Close has sung the anthem at Mets games more than once and the best thing about her rendition is that she sings it quickly...

Mets Jambalinka: Jason Bay, Wilmer Flores and Daniel Murphy

The big news surrounding the Mets has been the announcement that SNY is going to purchase a bunch of the shares that the Wilpons are offering in the team as a way to raise money. Some see this as nothing more than rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. But is there anything wrong about taking money from a profitable venture and using it to support a struggling one in your financial...

Mets Cut Ties WIth Reyes, Jose Cuts Hair With Marlins: Just Doesn't Seem Right

Last night the much awaited hair cutting ceremony of former Mets SS Jose Reyes took place. I can't describe how much it pains me to scribble "former."As anyone with a pulse knows, I have been sick to my stomach since it was obvious the Mets had absolutely zero interest in re-signing Reyes, let alone his eventual signing with the dreaded Marlins. I also firmly believe...

What Are You Watching For The Most During Spring Training?

With Spring Training right around the corner it’s time to start to get into the baseball spirit. Even though it appears we are not going to be contending for a title this season, there is still plenty to be excited about.  There is always the outside chance that we make it interesting and contend for the second wild card spot.  For that to potentially happen things need...

A Possible Future HOF Available to Mets on the Cheap

Reports indicate that Johnny Damon is looking for a contract in the $5 million dollar range. I doubt he can score that kind of deal this late in the offseason, so maybe the Mets should see if they could swoop in and sign him to an incentive-laden deal. Where would Damon fit? How about centerfield? Yes, I know the issues with the pop-gun arm, however Damon can still hit (.261/16...

The Often Overlooked Front Office Position

Whenever there is a discussion about General Manager’s talents with regards to a rebuilding team, it often seems like the amateur draft is a measuring stick used, and it’s used improperly. Perhaps it is because the General Manager is seen as the face of the franchise in terms of decisions to be made, but in reality, the General Manager has little to do with the amateur draft...
