What is the problem with Jonathan Broxton? I’ve heard reports he may be hiding an injury but watching him throw there’s no wince or any sign of pain. I tried looking for mechanical flaws but he seems to have the same mechanics in 2009 as he does in 2011. There’s only one conclusion, he’s just lost it.
I don’t understand how a guy can lose 4 mph off his average fastball, down from 98 miles per hour to 94 mph in one season but Broxton has done just that. The only thing I can really truly point to is fatigue, he may just have a bad case of rubber arm. Joe Torre used him in two 40+ pitch games last season, and before that horrendous 4 run 48 pitch game he had versus the Yankees, Broxton had surrendered a total of 3 runs. He was even still good after that as he gave up a game on July 3rd and that was all until the All Star game but for some reason after that, he just got hammered giving up as many runs (7) near the end of July as he did up until then (8).
