The Padres (71-80) came back against the Pirates in the ninth inning to pull out the victory, 3-2. Rene Rivera had a great game both behind and at the plate, throwing out Andrew McCutchen and Felix Pie on the basepaths and hitting the go-ahead run in the ninth against Pirates closer Mark Melancon.
Andrew Cashner was inserted as a pinch-runner and scored the tying run on a Jedd Gyorko single. Padres fans both cheered and winced as he slid into home plate headfirst.
This morning, it’s Breakfast Baseball at 9:35am PDT, with Ian Kennedy against Gerrit Cole and the Padres go for the 4-game sweep and try to make it 31-10 in PNC Park.
