Yesterday, the Phillies added outfielder Zach Collier and right-handed pitchers Ethan Martin, Trevor May, and Jonathan Pettibone to their 40-man roster, protecting them from other teams selecting them in the Rule 5 Draft. The Phillies now have 38 players on the 40-man roster.
Players generally become Rule 5 Draft eligible when not on the 40-man roster and they meet the following condition: a player was signed at age 18 or younger and has accrued five years of Minor League service OR a player was signed at age 19 or older and has accrued four years of Minor League service. Not every player eligible can be protected and every player who meets the above criteria is eligible to be drafted by any other Major League team with room on their own 40-man roster. That team, however, must keep the selected player on their Major League roster for the entire season o...

The Phillies announced today that outfielder Zach Collier and right-handed pitchers Ethan Martin, Trevor May, and Jonathan Pettibone have been added to the 40-man roster.
Collier, 22, was the Phillies’ supplemental first round pick, 34th overall, in 2008. The 6’2 lefty showed improved plate discipline in 2012, hitting .269/.333/.399 in his first year at High-A Clearwater...
Nate Schierholtz was the one player the Phillies got in return for Hunter Pence who was not only big league-ready, but had already accrued a fair amount of major league service time. A kind of enigma in San Francisco, Schierholtz came to Philly with the promise of consistent playing time and an opportunity to prove himself to his new manager as an everyday player. It was a new start...
Darin Ruf could make the 25-man team of the 2013 Philadelphia Phillies next April. However, it will be due only in part to his long-ball noise during October and November. But keep in mind, the warning-track patrol should become much clearer by mid-December.

Tyler Cloyd wasn’t on anyone’s radar before the 2012 season began.
Cloyd was with the organization, but he was an unproven commodity buried in the minor league system.
Although few people had heard of Cloyd before the season began, many started to take notice of him while he...

According to rumors, the Philadelphia Phillies view free agent outfielder Josh Hamilton as a "fallback option" if they are unable to sign B.J. Upton and Michael Bourn.
The Phillies have some decisions to make for tonight's deadline to protect players from the Rule 5 Draft. Before midnight tonight, any player signed at 18 or younger with five years of minor league time, or signed at 19 with four or more, must be on the 40 man roster, or they will exposed to the draft. Being that they have 34 players on the 40 man now, they cannot...
Per the IronPigs, the Phillies have rounded out their Minor League coaching staffs. Joining new manager Dave Brundage on the ‘Pigs staff is the returning hitting coach Sal Rende and Ray Burris, who joins the ‘Pigs as their pitching coach replacing Rod Nichols.
From the press release:
Burris, 62, becomes just the second pitching coach in team history. The native of Duke, Okla...
The Philadelphia Phillies are open to almost any option that would fill the gaping hole that they have at third base. That almost should not include the recently designated for assignment Chone Figgins.
In the old days the Phillies would go after a guy like Figgins and then do a public relations job on their fans as to why they thought he would return to the player he was four years...
Earlier this week it was reported that the Philadelphia Phillies considered free agent slugger Josh Hamilton as a “backup option” in
their pursuit of outfielders. However, Hamilton is no longer on the team’s
list, according to Jayson Stark of ESPN.
Agents who have spoken with the Phillies say that despite
their pursuit of both a center fielder and right fielder...
Figgins seemed to lose himself while playing in Seattle. Could relocating to Philadelphia get his career back on track? Photo: AP
With Chone Figgins being designated for assignment by the Mariners yesterday, all signs point to the once productive player hitting the free agent market. Ian Riccaboni and I sat down to discuss whether Figgins might be an option worth exploring for the...

In preparation for the Rule 5 draft, the Phillies have added four players to the 40-man roster, CSNPhilly reports. The four are RHP Trevor May, RHP Jonathan Pettibone, OF Zach Collier, and RHP Ethan Martin. The move keeps other teams from claiming them in the upcoming Rule 5 draft.
The draft allows a team to select players from...
While Upton is the center of the Braves attention, he may be in the center of the Phillies' field next year. Photo: AP
Slow news day today as we still wait for the dominoes to fall in the center field market, however, Danny Knobler of CBS Sports reported today that while B.J. Upton is the Braves top target, the Phillies are considered to be the favorite for the right handed center...
Jamie "Grand Pappy" Moyer hit the half century mark on Sundy, turning 50 years old. The crafty lefty pitched 25 seasons, 5 of which were with the Phillies. He also played for the Cubs, Rangers, Cardinals, Orioles, Red Sox, Mariners, and Rockies. Assuming he retires, he ends his career with 269 wins with a 4.25 ERA over 4074 innings. Baseball-Reference ranks him as the 125th...
