Found November 12, 2013 on Fightin For Philly:

Darin Ruf has played just 85 games in the MLB. He’s been inconsistent, and it’s entirely fair not to trust him as the Phillies’ 2014 starting right fielder. But I’d certainly rather have him than Marlon Byrd — who was just given a 2-year, $16 million deal by the Phillies. With that move, the Phillies’ outfield will likely be Brown in left, Revere in center, and Byrd in right. John Mayberry Jr. and Ruf will likely find spots on the team. Perhaps the only positive not to come out of the deal is the possible end to Michael Martinez’s stay in Philadelphia. However, Martinez is like that villain in horror movies that doesn’t seem to die — he’ll be back.   When it comes to Byrd vs. Ruf, it’s quite simple: 36-year old vs. 27-year old $8 million player vs. $500,000 player Under club control until 2016 vs. under club control until 2020 .761 career OPS vs. .838 career OPS A ceiling that has been reached vs. a guy with some potential   This is, in my opinion, one of the worst moves of Ruben Amaro Jr.’s tenure as Phillies General Manager.

  • I agree totally. He should have traded Ryan Howard and John Mayberry put Darrin Ruf at first base and sign a much better outfielder than Marlon Bryd. Wasn't he already a Phillie. Once is enought!!!
  • You obviously know very little about baseball or you don't watch it. If you did you would know that Darin Ruf is not an every day OF and if you did you would know that Byrd still moves very well and at 36 is more athletic and if you did you would know this is one move at the front of an off season.
  • Can you read???? Not sure? I didn't say he should play the OF, he should be at first base. If Marlon Byrd is sooooooo good why did they trade him in the first place and why bring in an OF that is 36 years old????????

FOX's Howard Eskin is reporting that the Phillies are working on a major trade involving Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista. Eskin has been wrong before. In fact, he's been wrong a lot. But every now and again, he manages to find out a major rumor right before things go down. Eskin is reporting that the Phillies like the 33-year old slugger's versatility...

Phillies Offseason Preview: The Infield

Previously on “Phillies Offseason Previews,” I took a look at what the Phillies should do regarding their Pitching and Catching at the major league level. Like those previous installments of this 4-part series (it may be 5, depending on how much I want to delve into the bench), this preview of the remainder of the Phillies infield stems from a simple belief: the Phillies are...

Veterans, thank you from Phillies Nation

There many men and women who have bravely served our country (and some serving today). We’d like to think the finest of these warriors were bred here in the Delaware Valley and raised Phillies fans. But no matter who you are or where you’re from, the commitment by armed forces personnel to keep the rest of us safe is something to be commended. We here at Phillies Nation want...

Top 10 reasons why the Phillies signed Marlon Byrd

Dollar Sign On The Fake Muscle 10) 36-year-old guys coming off career years with a history of PED usage are just great investments 9) Didn't want John Mayberry Jr. to worry that anyone was going to be able to take his place 8) Having corner OFs that are actually better than the guys who have that job for rival teams is just cheating 7) By GM Ruben Amaro's standards...

Miguel Gonzalez Assigned Uniform Number; Justin De Fratus Switches

The Phillies updated their roster today on their website to reflect some uniform numbers. I suppose the team wanted to give fans a jump on their Christmas shopping. Order your Miguel Gonzalez jersey now! Justin De Fratus will take number 30, worn by Rich Dubee the last nine seasons. No...

Phillies enlist Byrd for two years, $16 million

The cost of doing business in baseball's inflationary market manifested itself Tuesday in the form of a 36-year-old outfielder who was exiled last winter to Mexico. Marlon Byrd signed a $700,000 last-chance, minor-league contract with the New York Mets in February and was traded to Pittsburgh in August. He bashed 24 home runs in a 2013 resurrection. That made him attractive...

Philadelphia Phillies agree to terms with Marlon Byrd

Marlon Byrd is flying back to a familiar perch, agreeing to a two-year deal worth $16mm with the Philadelphia Phillies. The 36-year old outfielder wasted little time in free agency, flirting with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Seattle Mariners, and New York Mets before returning to the team he started his career with in 2002. After appearing in only 47 games in an suspension-shortened 2012...

Since then, he’s played for the Rangers, Cubs, Red Sox, Mets, and Pirates. He made the All-Star team in 2010 while playing for the Cubs...

Phillies sign Marlon Byrd to two-year deal

The Philadelphia Phillies have gone cheap in their search for an outfielder, inking former Met and Pirate Marlon Byrd to a two-year deal. Terms are currently unknown, though Adam Rubin of ESPN New York had a source tell him that Byrd would make $16 million over the two years.
