Found November 12, 2013 on Fightin For Philly:

Darin Ruf has played just 85 games in the MLB. He’s been inconsistent, and it’s entirely fair not to trust him as the Phillies’ 2014 starting right fielder. But I’d certainly rather have him than Marlon Byrd — who was just given a 2-year, $16 million deal by the Phillies. With that move, the Phillies’ outfield will likely be Brown in left, Revere in center, and Byrd in right. John Mayberry Jr. and Ruf will likely find spots on the team. Perhaps the only positive not to come out of the deal is the possible end to Michael Martinez’s stay in Philadelphia. However, Martinez is like that villain in horror movies that doesn’t seem to die — he’ll be back.   When it comes to Byrd vs. Ruf, it’s quite simple: 36-year old vs. 27-year old $8 million player vs. $500,000 player Under club control until 2016 vs. under club control until 2020 .761 career OPS vs. .838 career OPS A ceiling that has been reached vs. a guy with some potential   This is, in my opinion, one of the worst moves of Ruben Amaro Jr.’s tenure as Phillies General Manager.

  • I agree totally. He should have traded Ryan Howard and John Mayberry put Darrin Ruf at first base and sign a much better outfielder than Marlon Bryd. Wasn't he already a Phillie. Once is enought!!!
  • You obviously know very little about baseball or you don't watch it. If you did you would know that Darin Ruf is not an every day OF and if you did you would know that Byrd still moves very well and at 36 is more athletic and if you did you would know this is one move at the front of an off season.
  • Can you read???? Not sure? I didn't say he should play the OF, he should be at first base. If Marlon Byrd is sooooooo good why did they trade him in the first place and why bring in an OF that is 36 years old????????

Phillies Offseason Preview: The Infield

Previously on “Phillies Offseason Previews,” I took a look at what the Phillies should do regarding their Pitching and Catching at the major league level. Phillies enlist Byrd for two years, $16 million

The cost of doing business in baseball's inflationary market manifested itself Tuesday in the form of a 36-year-old outfielder who was exiled last winter to Mexico. Marlon Byrd signed a $700,000 last-chance, minor-league contract with the New York Mets in February and was traded to Pittsburgh in August. He bashed 24 home runs in a 2013 resurrection. Philadelphia Phillies agree to terms with Marlon Byrd

Marlon Byrd is flying back to a familiar perch, agreeing to a two-year deal worth $16mm with the Philadelphia Phillies. After appearing in only 47 games in an suspension-shortened 2012...
