In an odd move this week, the Phillies traded my favorite utility man, Wilson Valdez, to the Reds for a minor-league pitcher. 26-year old Jeremy Horst spent most of last season with triple-A Louisville, where he posted a 1-4 record and had a 2.81 ERA in 36 games. He did make 12 relief appearances for the Reds and posted a 2.93 ERA. Horst will get an invite to Spring Training. But back to Valdez…I am not really sure what the Phillies are thinking, aside from the fact that they picked up maybe a few too many bench pieces this offseason. But among all of those bench guys, Valdez seems like the most valuable. Certainly in the last two years, he has proven his worth, filling in anywhere and everywhere he was needed. Most notabley, Valdez picked up the majority of the slack when Jimmy Rollins was injured. And in a 19-inning affair this past May with the Reds (oddly enough, his new team), Valdez even pitched an inning, picking up a win. Perhaps Bob Vetrone of “Boopstats” on expl...

Why the hell did Amaro trade Valdez?

Wilson Valdez has done a serviceable job for the Phillies over the past two seasons as a utility infielder. He logged time at 2nd, 3rd, and SS, playing adequate defense. He even won a game in relief last season. His bat wasn't much (.254/.652 in 210 games), but most UTL players aren't. He was set to earn $930K in 2012. Trading him to the Reds seems like nothing more than...

Wilson Valdez Is a Cincinnati Red

Remember when Wilson Valdez pitched a scoreless 19th inning against the Cincinnati Reds in late May last season? Remember how he earned the win? Did you ever think he would be a Red the next season? Yeah, me neither. Today it was announced that the Phillies had traded Wilson Valdez to the Reds. In exchange, the Phils will receive LHP Jeremy Horst. No, not horse. Horst. He is a 26...

The End of the Wilson Valdez Era

It is with much sadness that the Phillies announced the end of the WIlson Valdez era today as he was traded to the CInncinati Reds for LHP Jeremy Horst.  Horst, a 26 year old reliever pitched predominately for Louisville, the AAA Affiliate of the Reds last season, going 1-4 with a 2.81 ERA in 36 games, while holding the opponents to a .219 batting average. Horst was originally drafted...

Phillies deal Valdez to Reds for lefty Horst

The Phillies have addressed their need for left-handed depth in the bullpen by acquiring 26-year-old Jeremy Horst from the Cincinnati Reds for utility infielder Wilson Valdez. Antonio Bastardo was the only dependable lefty reliever the Phils had in 2011. Philadelphia has since added veteran Dontrelle Willis as a free agent. Horst, who will be a

One of the Phillies most beloved bench players was sent out of town as the Phillies traded Wilson Valdez to the Cincinnati Reds for left-handed relief pitcher Jeremy Horst. Reds Acquire Valdez, Avoid Arbitration With Masset

If the signing of utility man Willie Harris on Monday wasn't enough to secure depth in the Cincinnati infield, Wednesday's deal sure did. Late Wednesday afternoon, the Redlegs pulled the trigger on a trade that landed utility infielder Wilson Vadlez from the Phillies in exchange for left-handed reliever Jeremy Horst. Valdez appeared in 99 games for the NL East Champs...
